Thinking of getting a bunny...what type to get?

Hollands are fabulous pets and I would definitely get a male, as they are general much friendlier and less territorial than females. Other smaller breeds that are good pets are mini rex, himilayans, mini lops, havana's & dutch.

I personaly think you should try to raise a male this time. I raise many different breeds and think that Holland Lops and Mini-Rexes are the frendliest you should try them and buy them as babies that way they can become more attached to you.

just chiming in on an old thread, but I am a personal fan of french lops, mini lops, and flemish giants. We have friends that have light grey Flemish in their house with their golden retriever...and neither one has killed the other yet

As for having it fixed. I see no reason. We bred rabbits for six years, showed them a lot, and never had any trouble with them. We had MANY rabbits that were great pets! Some of our best show animals were so spoiled. We had a mini lop buck that ran around our house all the time, but we finally moved him outside to a rabbit hutch but he still gets to come in from time to time. He has a fawn mini lop doe for a buddy now, but they can only see each other through the little window frame between their compartments.

I found a pair of dwarf hotots! I will be picking them up on the 8th! YAY!!!! I am so excited!!! Thanks so much for everyone who made suggestions! It was a hard choice especially btw the hotots and holland lops! Maybe someday I can have both!

For an indoor pet rabbit neutering will help reduce spraying urine, make litter box training easier, and get rid of most of the territorial behavior which also allows you to have 2 rabbits in the same cage. Of course if you are raising them like a breeder normally does in individual cages outside there isn't much point even if you are keeping them as pets. Aside from the occasionally insane doe from hormones which would make a better pet once spayed.

I was in 4-H for seven years and showed rabbits for four of those. At my peak showing time I had about 30 rabbits. I had american fuzzy lops, which are basically a fuzzy holland lop lol and dwarf hotots. I still have my first rabbit I ever got (she's an american fuzzy lop) she is a sweetheart and loves to get held. I also have a fuzzy lop that also was fine with being held and was like a big teddy bear! My first time ever showing showmanship at my local fair I used her and we won best intermediate showman Overall my experience with the fuzzy lops are that they are an awesome breed and like 85% of them don't mine being held and are very laid back and calm. only downside is that you do need to keep up on grooming

The Hotots on the other had have a little more pep in their step and are more active lol I have an older one that I adore and he loves to get held but the other ones are kind of jumpy, but they are still an awesome breed!
