Turkey poults seem to be susceptible to diseases. If you don't have or get any diseases, raiseing poults seems easy. If you get a disease and half your turkeys die, it seems a lot harder. This year, I ordered 18, one arrived dead, one failed to thrive and eventually dies, and two others that appeared healthy died suddenly in their first week. The other 14 are doing great! Out of 104 meatbirds, 4 died as chicks, and a couple others died just before butchering. If you do the math, our turkey death rate was about half that of the chickens.
Give them food and water, keep their coop clean, and they will probably do just fine. But don't be surprised if you have some mortality.
A firend of ours bought 22 BBB turkeys without consulting his wiser half. She came home and asked what they were going to do with all the turkeys. He told her not to worry because turkey mortality is very high. They now have 22 turkeys stuffed in their freezer!
