Thinking of rocking the boat

Quote:
No, I personal don't really notice them because I am awaken by my roos every morning and have coffee with my flock every day before I go to the "big city of 300".

But in all honesty, it isn't fair. I would move to the house for sale next to my shop if I could keep a small flock. This is going to sound racist, and I am not... but, any other person in town would have been talked to and had their birds taken away by now. Like the example of the 6' deck with no rail. Anytime the zone board says anything they scream discrimination. It's wrong, really wrong. I just wonder if by doing the "well they have chickens" I would make the city do something about it.

OR....

Should I do what I want and prepare for my retirement to town by defending them (can't speak a lick of non-english though) and getting the laws changed to keep a small flock for eggs???

Well who are they crying Discrimination to if they don't speak English? Do they have a lawyer or something in town? Do their kids go to school there? Better to talk to them and find out if they know about the law. Then if they have a lawyer who is already working on it. Finally, if they don't know the law maybe you could work with them in such a as to include them in your fight to change the laws instead of being against them. I you get a coop and set up something like that but haven't talked to them and others then you have enemies instead of friends.
PS most new Americans have a stronger since of Americanism than born citizens because we sometimes take it for granted. I am sure if you tried a united front then you would get more changed instead of more laws infringing on individual rights.

New here and just had to post, lol, my grandparents know that the law where they lived was changed because of their chickens and duck, you never know what will happen if the right people don't like poultry

LOVE THE SITE!!!!!!!!!

I would go to the city and tell them you are goin to break the law. yes you heard me right, i would tell them about your roosyou are goin to display , and those of the people of hispanic descent.
reason bein if they howler discrimination, they cant cause the city also locked up a white boy(you)for the same thing givin them a leg to stand on. I would also like to see how there home owners ins, reacts if they saw pics of the 6ft deck with no railing, maybe leave annoymous pics with address of the house with ins, company in town or if you know who ins. them . then you maybe could challange the citys chicken ordinince on friendly terms and every one wins , except those of mexican descent

I really, really doubt if they have any insurance. After the tornado wiped out most of the town 11 years ago a local church bought them a used modular home to replace their home. Well, they put it up on a block basement that sits about 6' up out of the ground. Looks stupid, but that is a different story. So in front of the mod. is a big deck with the entrance stairs. Maybe they are waiting for one of the family members to fall off so they can sue somebody. There is always someone to sue, isn't there

Oh, back to the insurance... If they didn't pay a dime for this property or home, why would they pay an insurance premium?

We live in the country too and in the town next to us it's illegal to keep chickens but ok to have horses! It just so happens that the only employer in town is a big poultry plant, and they were sued and lost a couple of years ago for hiring only illegal workers, but they still continue. Don't get me wrong I'm cherokee and dark skinned but there is something odd in the treatment and behavior here. I mean in less than 10 yrs. the population here has doubled and an estimated half the town is illegal. What used to be a nice little town is now experiencing white, black, and brown flight. Old residents are leaving in droves because they don't want to live next door to 10 pitbulls. A lot of the nice little neighborhoods now look like third world countries. We even had a homicide where 5 people were gunned down no evidence all were illegal men. It's a little scary cause the population of the town is a whopping 1500! Well I should say the half of the town that is registered and counted. We also have all sorts of other things like drunk drivers who never get punished as they are illegal and the law doesn't apply. I say stand up now before it's too late. It's not fair to legal law abiding people that they are the only ones punished or made to follow the rules. If you don't want to put out chickens maybe start a petition or show up at a city meeting and ask why the law doesn't apply to them? Just my thoughts...

DO they effect you? if so choose a course of action, If they dont effect you, then leave it alone, its not your problem, dont make it your problem.

If you ignore a problem, then you are a part of the problem.

This is Comfrey, Minnesota. They can't afford to alienate the few people who remain in town. I say get your roosters, get the ordinances changed, and move back into town. Those midwestern small towns are bleeding people to the larger cities, and anything that makes living there more attractive, they should be willing to do. The only big problem I see is the whole "I live in town so I won't have to put up with chickens/cows/pigs" thing.

Small town Minnesota is still very white, and I think a little afraid of offending or be thought offensive that they sometimes go too far the other way. My hometown was like that, but its changing. This can be very good, but it is hard for many.

Maybe a little letter to the Attorney General and/or Governor of your state might help a bit. Unsigned by you, of course. It wouldn't hurt to cc: it to a newspaper, but I wouldn't mail the letter from your town.
