~*Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch-Athon*~ all poultry welcome!

. My turkey has been laying consistently everyday for 6 weeks. Now she seems to be laying every other day for this week. She is penned, so lays in a brooder cage I added with a big comfy nest. Should I be concerned, or is she just worn out and taking it slow this week?

one incubator is now out of commission for eggs..

feral kittens.. born tuesday night
Momma cat, who has been hanging around for over a year and mooching food from us, gave birth then left them Wednesday morning.. she didn't bother to come back as of late last night. So now we're handfeeding 5 kittens.. 2 boys and 3 girls. We gave her every chance to come back for them before we took them.. since we knew it was going to drop down into the low 40's last night it was either bring them in or leave them for predators or to die from hypothermia, dehydration and starvation.

when we brought them in they were pretty chilled already and two were very constipated.. so they ended up in one of the incubators where they will be staying for the next few weeks
weights range from 84 grams to 106 grams. .. and yup.. umbilical cords are still attached.. my husband had wondered why she had them here.. I think because she knew we would bring them in and care for them..

so I will be hand feeding them every few hours and hoping for the best

Just an FYI, I seem to remember reading once that a momma cat stimulates urination and bowel movements in kittens by licking that area. No need to lick, I believe you can just massage. lol

thanks!

So sweet. I think you win the most unusual critter incubated award!

Oh this isn't the first time I've had to hand raise kittens or little helpless critters in general.. so I'm well aware of the whole issue with taking care of their bodily functions.. (and a wet warm cotton ball works very well for imitating momma cat)!

Ok Turkey pros..... tell me about bloody Turkey hens. My hen is sitting under the nest boxes insane a d she is not budging. Last two days I had to fight her for the eggs and today she literally attacked me. Will she sit? Will she lay after?

If you want to fight her for the eggs, go for it. If not, let her hatch a brood then take the babies agter a week if you want her to go back to laying. It's plenty early in the season for her to get back to laying after a hatch.

My turkeys have not gone back to laying!!! One hen was laying quite a bit when it was wayyy to cold (below zero) and then stopped. I don't think I will have any turkey eggs to incubate for the hatch-athon.

Squeezing them doesn't seem to help either!

So, if I don't get any eggs soon I may have to purchase hatching eggs. Does anyone have any Narrangansett hatching eggs they would like to sell? If so please pm me. Thank you!
