~*Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch-Athon*~ all poultry welcome!

I got 14 turkey and 22 duck eggs set. Shocked I had that many duck eggs. I only have 2 females and I collected for 8 days. They were busy!

Everyone else get there eggs set? This is my first year doing this hatch-athon and eager to see how many are set.
I would really like to know as well talk to some people maybe an admin will give you some help to count all the eggs set. I counted just under 100 but that was only like 10 pages

Incubators full until next week, so it looked like I wouldn't be able to set turkey eggs for the Cinco de Mayo hatchalong. Then I checked for eggs this evening, and one of the turkey hens was setting on the nest! I put some eggs under her, and she hissed and carried on and just about took my hand off. Hope I can convince the two other hens to lay somewhere else. To get to her nest, I have to crawl over one roost and under another...I've been gathering eggs with one of those clamper-reacher thingies, and don't look forward to trying to sort out new eggs way back there every day.

So, of course, when I went out to set the eggs under her, I was a bit excited. So I forgot a few things. Like new batteries for the headlamp, which went out while walking out to the coop. Nice moon, no problem. Oh, and my cell phone...also not a big deal. But then I forgot to flip the latch down so the door to the turkey house wouldn't accidentally flop down while I was in the turkey house. Guess what...? Yep, after being mauled by the hen I found that I was locked in the turkey house with no cell phone and no flashlight. It took quite awhile to work the latch into a position where I could release it, but thankfully I was able to do so. Tomorrow I will move the latch to where I can reach it from the inside!

Poults will be mutts...3 hens and 3 toms, lots of possible combinations. They will taste good, though, if all goes well!

I'm reading along, but Penelope decided to set about a week ago, so no more eggs for the 'bator.
I have ten in that are in the Easter HAL, but don't know if they're going to be turkeys or not - can't see much! There is finally an air cell, and a dark mass below it, but I can't see veins. Having never candled turkey eggs, and not having a 'proper' candling setup (I use my headlight, cupped in my hand) makes it more of a challenge ;). I know they were mating for over a month before she laid an egg; she laid only sixteen before she decided to set - on the seventeenth egg and two golf balls... silly turkey! I returned the (un-incubated) eggs to her. Hopefully, either she or the 'bator will produce some baby turkeys!

My eggs haven't been delivered yet so I won't be setting until this evening. Darned post office wouldn't deliver them so now I have to leave work early to go pick them up before the post office closes GRRRRARRRRR!

I plan to set turkey, duck and replace any non-developing with silkie and polish chicken eggs though!

Quote: Counting would be a first! lol maybe we can count how many turkeys are hatched . . .

Anyone feel free to correct me where I'm wrong.

The brief history of the Cinco de Mayo turkey hatchathon :
It started during the Mahonri 3rd annual Easter Hatch A Long. People started discussing hatching turkeys after that hatch. That year if turkeys were set on Easter they would happen to hatch on Cinco de Mayo. Chooks Chick stepped up and started the turkey hatchathon thread. A few people that had been assisting with the Easter hatch joined and it became a more relaxed, enjoyable, and a rather safe place for them. Away from the contest and deadlines, etc. It doesn't mean there won't be a contest if somebody decides to start one. Now it's time to get back into my jacket and take my medicine. Good night all.
Hard to beleive that was 2 years ago already-- seems like yesterday waiting for the hens to get laying for2012; they were late so I set late that year.

And I like that we kept the contests on this one thread-- the few that we had. Just entertainment while 28 days slowly creep by. lol

Our rules are rather loose--- join in.

ohhhhh my fav goat too!!! love them!!! hey Silky refer to my image above! :tongue :smack
My buck is nubian & my doe is pygmy/nubian. They are small, not the huge meat nubians, so would be perfect for you Sally. Already broke to lead & used to being tied out. No fences necessary...cuz...as you know...there's no such thing as goatproof fence!
eggs have arrived... peafowl ancona duck
Yay! Looks like my duckies traveled well. Please let me know how they do. And btw, the darker colored ones aren't dirty. I have 1 hen who puts a purple/grey bloom on her eggs. It varies in intensity from charcoal to pale lavender.
My goose has great timing. She started sitting in 5 duck eggs and one of her own today. Hers will be infertile because I have no gander. I still don't have a empty incubator so the turkeys will be few days behind the group.
Toss the turkeys under her too. Just make sure to steal them before she tries to teach them to swim.
