Third time around Tampa Bay Area Chicken Swap - Saturday, January 28th

Okay, peeps. Yesterday evening I drank way too much ice tea too late in the day, and as I lay awake tossing and turning, I decided something. I want to incorporate a fundraiser for the victims of the tragedy in Japan into my swap. I actually spent half my childhood in Japan with my family, and I have so many wonderful memories of this amazing country and it's people. I cannot watch the news more than a few times in a week right now - seeing the destruction is just too heart breaking. I owe them in part for who I am now, and it was also where I had my first flock of chickens and three little quail.

SO the other memory that came back - and it's a bit of a fuzzy one for reasons we will not discuss

- was of a night in a beach bar in Belize shortly after college. We played what can only be described as "chicken poop bingo". I placed one of my precious just-out-of-college dollars on a number cooresponding to a square on the ground. Then a guy let a chicken wander around the squares and wherever it pooped was the winning number.

I've seen it done with cows up north, too. We will stick with one of my chickens, Ebony. $2 a square, we'll play however many times people want to. I'll come up with a fabulous prize - maybe I'll ask the feed store or some place for a donation.

I will also buy some sodas and water to have on hand and just take donations for those, as well as whatever I get for fresh eggs I from the girls. Plus whatever I make from the chicks I sell for Martin Farms goes into the pot.

Can't wait for the swap! See you all then!

Hi,

We are so excited about the meet next Saturday. Our broody hen just hatched 2 out of the 5 eggs we gave her and we are hoping we might be able to purchase a few more tiny chicks to fill in the empty spaces in the nest. Do you think she will accept chicks 2 weeks after the others hatched? I see a lot of people bringing chicks but will any be 2 weeks or less old? I was hoping for a Maran, maybe BLRW, and maybe something (good egg layer, quiet and non-agressive) that is blue or lavender.

We may be bringing one or two pullets that have been laying for a few months. They are great layers but are not exactly what we want in our limited size flock.

This is going to really be fun!

I am trying to put together the things that I wanted to bring to the swap to sell. One item is too big for me to lug there, a 2' x 4' x 6' double decker cage on wheels that assembles and disassembles very easy, and has removable "mess pans" to catch droppings.

I had purchased it "used" to raise quail, but have since decided against raising quail (you can't really free range quail, duh).

So, if anyone here is interested, just PM me, otherwise I will put on CL soon, as it is not practical for BYC's "Everything else" listing area.

Chics, since you are organizing, have you started a listing of who is bringing what, except what is listed here? For example, you said something about water and lemonade, but won't you need cups too? Or are you going the can/bottled route? What about ice? I would love to help you with the swap and fund raising, but need to know what would be helpful to you as I am sure others would be willing to step up as well.

Nava, sorry you won't be there, I was looking forward to meeting you and to see your babies.

If anyone has any chicks hatched close to 3/22, good layers, docile and quiet, I would love to pick up a few. If you are going to the meet, we can wait until then or we would be willing to pick up over the weekend. Let me know, I just want to try to have about 5 under our little momma.

I'm glad you are bringing some layers, as a few people responding to my CL add have asked about hens instead of chicks. I'm sure you will find homes for them. I shoudl have some very young chicks from Martin Farms, as they are arriving on Friday as day-olds so will only be about a week old by the swap. I will let you know which breeds when they arrive and I hear from Sandi. I'm sure other folks will have plenty of tiny chicks, too, as 'spring is in the air!'
Wasn't having a broody hatch eggs just so much fun?!

We'll miss you Nava - I hope someone else has some BLRW's - lots of folks asking for those.

Has anyone met anybody around her that breeds bantam cornish?

Yeah, I was planning on just doing cans and bottles. If you will be here by 8:30, I would love for you to bring a few bags of ice - that would save me from running out to the store in the midst of getting set up. Thank you so much for offering!

Oh, I forgot to mention I will have Jersey Giant chicks, too. And the guy looking for the cornish will bring hatching eggs for Silkie/ Duccle crosses - how cute would that be?!

Yay!! We will be there!!

(some of the chicks we will be bringing with us, can be seen on our website)

I am going to try and have a chicken tractor 4x8 and a movable hen house 4x4 with me. If time permits I may have a few of each.

Also I will 60 plus chicks with me. They are what we are calling homestead chickens. The mature quickly, most of our hens are laying at 4 months and lay either daily or every other day. Light to bark brown eggs.
They are a mixes of maran, black australorp, buff, bard rock and/or Rhode island red.
