Hello, i am a new chicken owner with 2 young pullets. One a buff orpington and the other a mix, i believe she is a mix between either a ameracana or easter egger and either a barred rock or cockoo maran. I could be wrong on guessing the breed. They are approx 10 to 11 weeks old now. I was given these two from a friend who couldn't have any more chickens as she already has several.
I am hopeing the mixed breed is a pullet as we are not allowed to have any roosters. But she started to do a bit of a half crow a couple weeks ago, only in the morning, and not every day. And it does not sound like the typical rooster crow. Has anyone had experiences with pullets trying to crow? She isnt really showing any other rooster signs.

Is pic #2 a different bird from 1 and 4?

#2 is dark like a BR girl but the rest are light like a BR boy. Does it have a beard and sideburns like EEs? Can't really tell from the pics.
Can you give us a pic of the saddle feathers? I've seen hens crow and even mount other hens when there were no roosters to take care of business. You may have to wait for full on crowing or egg laying. Let's hope you don't have a Cockatrice! If you do you better kill it with fire and destroy any eggs he laid!

Don't know what a Cockatrice is?
Google it!

Same bird and does have the beard and sideburns like EE"s. She (Still hoping its a she) is dark like a BR, i would think the grayish white would be more prevalent if it was a male. I have attached another pic showing the feather colorings. I can work on getting a pic of the saddle feathers tomorrow.

My husband tells me that hens may crow if there is no rooster and believes she is a hen and not a cockerel. Has anyone had experience with partial crows in pullets around 8-12 weeks old or if hens do crow, it is when they are older?

I am really hoping its a hen and not a rooster. I have become attached to both chickens, they are socialized, and both love to roost on my shoulders and arms. If it does happen to be a rooster i will have to try to find another home for it that will take good care of him, which will be difficult. I do not want him to end up being killed.

And as side note, I know exactly what a Cockatrice is.
