I have eggs in the incubator. One chick hatched yesterday and had been clumsily stomping around my small incubator for 24hrs. I quickly opened the incubator and scooped her out a bit ago. I also swiped an egg to quickly candle and this is what i found (pics). It was on the underside of the egg, I think the chick may have cracked it. Theres no movement, or peeping from the egg, membrane is open with feathers sticking out, and possibly a toe visible. I dont know what to do 😥 I know its probably a lost cause, but I wanted to ask here before removing it. None of my other eggs have hatched, its been 24 hours since the first one...and I stupidly forgot what day I put them in, but knew time was close from candaling. Any advice?

All may not be lost with it - I would start by candling it to see where the air cell is, and then carefully removing a little bit of shell around the pip in the air cell, enough so that you can see if the chick is alive or not. Be careful to only remove shell in the air cell - this is the only area that's usually always safe from bleeding.

I did candle it earlier when I looked at it. The hole is no where near the air cell and it seems intact. I dont think its a pip, but damage caused by the other chick. I dont see a beak, just feathers and probably a toe. I wrapped in wet paper towel and put back in the incubator, but theres no movement from it. I think it still had a few days to go. The one that hatched yesterday was a bantam mix and I read they tend to take less time since they are smaller birds. This egg is from my brahma flock. I really hate to lose it as my only brahma rooster was killed in an animal attack last week, and i only have about 8 more hopefuls for next round of incubation from them, if these (now 7), dont hatch. My little incubator only holds 10 eggs at a time...

That was likely a pip - sometimes they are in the egg the wrong way. The shiny part showing in the hole is the beak. Is there still no more movement or noises? I would cautiously chip a little shell away around the pip to see if it's still alive.

You were right. It was a beak. There was never any movement or sounds from it since I had found it... I opened it and as I'd feared, it was dead, yolk not all the way absorbed. That chick was really packed in there! Idk what happened. Now I worry that all my chicks are dead inside the eggs as well. Theres been nothing from them 😥. I'm going to give them until Wednesday...
My one little chick that hatched is doing well though. Thanks for your replies.

I have found one “okay” incubator on the market. Incubators generally suck IMO. I don’t use them unless it’s my last COA.

A broody hen is always the best way to go if that’s an option.

There is so much to learn. Be nice and patient with the entire process. Experience helps a lot. Time will take care of that.

Sorry to hear that :( What day were they all due? What temperature and humidity were you using, and is the incubator still air or forced air?

[/You can use a lamp to check the air chamber of the egg. If the egg is full of hatching days, you can open the egg shell from the air chamber to see if the chick is still alive? If the chick is alive, you can try to open the egg shell to find the chick's mouth, so that he can breathe fresh air smoothly

This is my little incubator, (it stays set at that temp automatically, seems to have a fan inside. Not completely sure on the humidity level exactly, the instructions said you just keep the little center cup filled with water. I turned them myself, two-three times a day. The instructions made it sound like it was a plug it in, fill with water, turn eggs, forget it kinda thing... I'm currently a nursing student (so half crazy) and forgot exactly what day I put them in. 😬🤷‍♀️ if this chick was an early hatch at day 19, which is possible I suppose since her mom is a bantam...then today would be 21. If she was not an early hatch, then today would be 23. I kept track with candling really, and they all developed beautifully. The one that died from the previous egg pics was large and well formed. There's 7 eggs left in the incubator, 6 brahma eggs and one more mixed mystery egg. And of course, this ugly little hatchling my son already named Joy, and who seems to be spoiled already 🐣. Just to be safe since I'm not sure on my days, I'm thinking Wednesday is plenty of time to see if they're going to hatch. That would be 5 days after first/ only chick hatched.
