OK, I feel better. I just went down to visit with him for a while. I was just so SHOCKED to find babies after only 3 days and I guess I felt if anyone would understand, it would be the people on BYC.
He is a VERY nice guy. And he's actually got a great sense of humor. I asked him if he got all 12 eggs from the same nest and he said yes. I asked him if he happened to have a broody sitting on them at the time, and he said yes. Then his eyes lit up and he said "Are they hatching already???? I thought they might. She'd been on them a while." I couldn't help but laugh.
I reminded him that I had asked for FRESH eggs and he said "Well, I figured you wanted the babies and I knew those were going to hatch because she was setting on them for so long." I did explain exactly why I wanted fresh eggs and even went on to tell him how long it takes eggs to hatch, and the fact that the mother will abandon the eggs that take more than a couple of days to hatch after biddies start popping out. He didn't know that, but then said "Oh, well that might make sense why I keep finding eggs left in the nest after the mommas leave it with new babies."
I told him how shocked I was to find babies after only 3 days and he said "Yea, I gave you VERY fertile eggs!"
I laughed at the nut.
He lives on his father-in-laws land and takes care of the place for him because his in-laws have a house in town they live in most of the time. His FIL got the chickens a couple of years ago, dumped them off and said "Take care of them." He does seem to be getting interested in them though. He was like a little kid telling me how his mama chickens make a different little noise to call the babies over. He said "It is so cool - maybe they'll do it while you're here. He was shocked when I told him all mama hens do that.
He doesn't have internet access, but I told him if he has any questions or issues with the chickens to let me know and I'll help him out the best I can. As I was leaving he said "Next time I'll know when you say you want fresh eggs, you really do want fresh eggs!" I gave him a bottle of home made raspberry wine we bottled last weekend and told him "It's fresh!"
I still have no idea how many of those eggs are going to hatch in the next day or so. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I really hope I get at least 6 or so out of the 12. I may even have another one or two trying to go broody. I've been watching them. If so, I'll stick what she doesn't hatch under them.
Sometimes a person just needs to vent and talk to people who understand - even if that person is wrong. I was never really mad at my neighbor, just frustrated. I specifically asked for fresh eggs and even said "Just give me what you collect in a day and that will be fine". So yes, I was totally shocked and in disbelief to find babies after only 3 days. It's not the end of the world and I'm just fine. Just felt like screaming when it first happened and thought the good folks of BYC would understand.
Thanks again,
Penny
