I agree. Definitely a pullet, and I agree with the age. I don't have a Rural King, but if they are like Tractor supply, they probably don't have cross breeds except for sex-linked hybrids. I would go with Delaware.

Intentional hybrids with a purpose like sex-linked and meat birds. Not random cross-bred mutts.

She looks like a layer or dual purpose, def not meat. Not pretty enough to be bred for color. So, if hybrid, probably sex-linked.

I've only bought chicks from TS a few times, but I don't understand what the point would be to cross a Delaware and a White Plymouth Rock. I think it's just a Delaware or a production Delaware bred for eggs, not to standard. Or just poorly bred Delaware. Or maybe she'll get more color later.

I think you produced a good list of non-standard breeds and hybrids that can be investigated to determine this chicken's breed. (It's not on your list, but maybe you can think of others you've seen.) The hatcheries come up with this new stuff all the time so it is extremely difficult to keep up with unless one shops there frequently. Crazy for us to get stuck trying to figure out what it is by only thinking of standard breeds, esp. knowing it came from RK.

I was under the impression that she/he got it from a local breeder and not from a tractor supply. If thats the case then a poorly bred Delaware or sex-link like an Amber sex link makes more sense.. Though it doesn't have that shad of light amber color.

And as far as Rural King not getting in mutts...accidents do happen at the hatcheries they order from some times, and I wouldn't be surprised if Rural King occasionaly got some mutts unbeknownst to them.

Step 1 would be to find out which hatchery(ies) Rural King gets chicks from. That will narrow the possibilities.

I'm didn't research the Indian River from you list. When I looked at the others, I learned that technically, Dixie Rainbows, Rangers, and Asian Blues are not hybrids. The breeders are defining them as a new breed, and they probably applied for patent or trademarks for them (so other hatcheries can't use the name). They are just not Standard Breeds recognized by the APA. They are considered breeds because, whatever the original source breed, they are now bred by, for example, a Dixie Rainbow male to a Dixie Rainbow female, and when that is done, they should breed true. The definition of a hybrid is that the parents are still different breeds, e.g. a leghorn and a RIR, and the breeding of two hybrids will not give you a consistent result. This is actually a pain in the ass, so it appears it is mostly done for sex-link (can't get the sex-link any other way) and for cornish cross meat birds (because cx are too meaty to breed - often don't live long enough). I think the Amberlinks are sex-linked.

I often wonder why they don't just make labradoodles a breed, but they are not. They still breed a poodle and a labrador, although they complicate it with second generation labradoodle bred back to the poodle, or something like that.

And hybrid crops are a really big pain in the butt, because everything has to be hand-pollinated. That's why those producers want to use GMO technology.
