I've tried the vanilla car scents and the sticky pest strips...both did not work. Sure, flies got stuck to the pest strips, but it didn't get rid of them.

Then, one day...

I was in Home Depot looking for something heavy duty to kill giant spiders I just discovered in my basement (my throat still hurts from screaming...I seriously thought the cops were going to show up because my neighbors thought I was being murdered...no really, these spiders were so freaking big that I almost called the fire dept. LOL)

Anyway, I saw these fly traps and the woman who worked there said they really worked. Within hours of putting one up, the flies were crawling in. It was beautiful and so disgusting at the same time. I would always have a small swarm of flies in this one area next to the coop and now they are GONE! The activity on this fly trap was so great, but there were no flies anywhere else around the coop. It was truly like a fly magnet.

Below is a pic of one of these death bags filled with flies. I took this pic at night, so you don't see any activity, but if you look real close, you can see that this bag is filled with flies, most are dead, but some are still crawling around. It's so disgusting during the day that, while I really wanted a picture of all the flies trapped inside and all the flies trying to get inside, I couldn't get myself to go close enough to take a good picture. But, be warned... after it fills up a bit, the smell is so gross that I actually thought an animal died under the coop and was decaying. It was deceiving because it didn't actually smell bad right next to it so I didn't think it was the bag of dead flies, but when I took it down to throw it away, the smell went away.

Well worth the $5.

The sticky strips aren't meant to rid you of flies - they are best used in conjunction with the traps you have now discovered. The best approach is to hang the baited traps (that you now have) away from the coop/barn/house - this is to lure the flies out of the area you don't want them in because otherwise you are simply luring more flies into the area you don't want them and then hoping they go into the trap and die. Once the baited traps are hung away from the area, then you use the sticky strips to address those flies that are in that area. Many folks make the mistake of placing attractant based traps in the very area they are trying to rid of flies.

We have those at my stable, they're great. Always get FULL of flies, until they're up the top. I believe you can dump and refill them as well, right?

The thought of opening that bag and dumping them out just turns my stomach. I could barely grab it from the long string and put it in a large trash bag.

...but thanks for the idea.
