I found your web site from an article in the Dallas Morning News about backyard flocks. I'm a vegan, have been for 19 years, and always will be vegan. But I sure am pleased to see you guys building an alternative to factory farming.

This is really cool. It may not be at the top of your mind, but by creating these backyard flocks, and getting your eggs from your own backyard instead of a factory farm, you guys are reducing animal suffering considerably.

I hope that for people that choose to eat meat and eggs, this backyard flock trend continues to grow.

Welcome!!

It is good to hear from someone opposed to factory farming.

I am a vegetarian; but the only eggs I eat are from my own chickens and ducks. I won't support battery caged egg production.

I buy cheese from the CSA where I get my vegetables. The CSA is a way to help support local agriculture and get away from the monoculture of agribusiness.

This topic fascinates me.

Welcome to BYC. My 14 year old niece has been a vegetarian for over a year, about 2 months ago she became vegan. Good for her, but it is driving my sister crazy trying to make sure she eats properly, I feel for her. It is hard making sure a teenager eats properly, it's even harder if the teenager is vegan.

Hi John! Welcome! There are quite a few vegans on this forum who raise chickens as pets as well (they give the eggs away to family and friends).

We chose to raise our own chickens for the very reason you mentioned. I was vegetarian for 7 years because of factory farming and animal cruelty. I now choose my meat wisely (though limit the intake). We have 6 hens, no adult rooster and quite a few chicks. Hens will lay an egg regardless (no rooster needed) since it is their natural ovulation cycle (fertile or not). They have a large chicken house, a 3000 square foot run and when we are home, they free range the yard. Ours are spoiled rotten and treated like part of the family. We don't give any artificial lighting or anything, so in the winter they do not lay (chickens require 14 hrs of light a day to lay). I don't think our chickens suffer at all!

Heck, if they are sick or injured they stay in the house, they get lots of attention from us and even call out for us to come outside and pet them! Our chickens are pets with benefits and will remain here until they die of old age (even after they stop laying).

ETA: There are many people on this forum who raise backyard chickens for the same reason! Actually, if you do a search on this forum, you will see a number of threads where people have rescued chickens from the factory farms and raise them in the backyard. This one in particular is a wonderful story (though gut wrenching at the same time) of a bunch of hens rescued and now enjoying life in a backyard flock.
