This is what a raccoon can do to wire

Was that cage made with all that smaller hardware-cloth type wire, or did it have different wire in the middle?
Do you have any idea how long it was in the trap?
I imagine a trapped animal can come up with alot more strength than if it was trying to get into something........but still..............it frightens me!

The damaged part of the cage was the same material, it seems to be about 14 gauge welded wire. Mr. Coon was in it over night. Here's another pic where you can see what that part of the trap "used to be"! Yes, I figured he'd be frantic to get out and summon up extra strength, but, still, how hungry would he have to be to use that strength to get in!

I am in the process of buying wire for my permenant run, this was timely!! I am definately throwing more $$$ at the situation. Think I am going with 2 x 4 14 gauge on top and 1 x 2 14 gauge on the sides with apron of the same.

When we built our run, we used 12 gauge utility wire (with 1/2" hardware cloth on top of that). I haven't seen any 12 gauge around for a long time. Its all 14. I felt okay putting the 14 gauge on the top of the run, but I would feel insecure putting that on the sides, without the hardware cloth on top of it.

I have a coon that's trying to get into a window. The window is covered with 1/2" hardware cloth, held in place by wood all around, using screws.
I have discovered that you can't have anything near it that the coon could use to get to it..........like a tarp awning, a gutter, etc., etc. I'm even thinking that wood frame would be enough for the coon to hold onto while digging into the hardware cloth. The window is 4-5' off the ground.
Those danged coons are really contortionists.
I'm thinking of putting double hardware cloth on the windows.
I can't believe their strength. do you think its strength, or is it their sharp teeth and claws??

I would think it is the strength and teeth combined, pulling and biting. Do you think 14 gauge 1 x 2 inch would be ok without the hardware cloth? I have seen 12.5 gauge. I could run chicken wire on the inside of the lower areas. I am just glad I don't have to worry about bears!! I couldn't even imagine.
