We're in the middle of back to school week and our schedule is still a bit wacky...so it's getting dark, my daughter is in the shower (upstairs, back of house) and I am folding clothes (upstairs, front of house) and the chickens are not yet locked in for the night. I'm planning to lock their coop when I go back downstairs, and meanwhile I hear the shower turned off. A minute later I hear my daughter, so excited I can hardly understand her...Mom! Mom! I hear the egg song! So I'm wondering what's on the TV which is still running downstairs and all I can hear is Sponge Bob. My daughter calls me again: MOM! Outside! The egg song!! Now, we haven't had any eggs yet, but I found Egg Song videos on YouTube, and we've been waiting to hear our girls sing for us. So I tell my daughter there's no way our chickens are laying an egg at this time of night when suddenly I heard it too, from the back yard, carrying all the way to my upstairs bedroom, BOCK! Bock bock BOCK! Bock bock bock bock BOCK BOCK BOCK!! And I FLEW down the steps and outside and there are our four chickens, racing around the coop and run, trying to get in for the night but the door had somehow swung shut...they were locked out and NOT happy about it, and they were BOCK BOCK BOCKing to beat the band!! I opened their door, and immediately they were quiet...paraded into the run, into the coop, and I heard them fussing over who would sleep where, and then all was quiet again.

I locked their door and sat there for a minute, my heart still racing, and to tell the truth, not sure whether to laugh or cry..and I am in awe, and so very greatful, for the day those dear chickens came into our lives. And I just had to share with the wonderful people on BYC because nobody else would ever understand!!

Awww,,,glad that your chickies are all snuggled up now, safe and sound! I have to tell you that something like this happened to me today too! My RIR, Addie was standing in the pen and yelling out the egg song. I thought this was odd because she had laid her egg over 4 hours ago!!! The noise went on and on so I decide to go an investigate what was going on. I opened the egg box to see if maybe she had laid another egg and I found something alright...just not an egg. It was my cat, Newman all snuggled up in the warm, soft egg box! lol...I laughed so hard...he is one funny cat. He's always doing something that he shouldn't be doing! I took Newman out of the eggbox and Addie's bocking stopped too! Wish I had my camera at that moment!!! ~Beulah

Ohhh funny I can just imagine Addie's outrage to see this trespasser in her domain! And isn't it awesome how our chickens let us know when something is wrong! Unfortunately, tonight, my chickens told everyone in the neighborhood that something was wrong...lol...and I can only hope that one of the neighbors doesn't get an attitude and report us to the HOA. Sheesh!
