I'm super glad so many young people are getting interested in chickens and joining BYC for info/assistance. However, so many seem to think this is an online *social* forum like others they may frequent. Some seem to be seeking "followers" and "likes." Some are fantastic additions to this community. Others think this is a Discord-type forum or a Reddit. We talk about chickens (and other birds, etc) here. I am beginning to feel it's being hijacked. I'm not a "boomer," no matter how many people refer to me as such. I just don't care for the popularity contest or the putting folks on blast for their opinions. I don't need to know folks' life stories in the first few posts. And I certainly don't like seeing some absolutely skewer our more experienced and more knowledgeable members.

It's weird. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I actually had someone give me shade for being a "random poster" commenting on a thread that asked for advice. I'm like, wha????

I wonder if some of these folks are equally 'difficult' in person, or the sort who types things they wouldn't say face to face?!
And never seem to think that the 'cloud' is forever...

I’d also like to add that I myself am a younger but definitely not as young member of BYC as these people and I fully do not understand why people are putting all this stuff online. Literally no one cares homeboy. BYC can feel like there’s a clique of younger users that PM and ramble on threads like crazy and then there’s the rest of us. Not necessarily a bad thing, just kinda weird considering there’s countless of social media platforms and this is a chicken forum

There are so many different areas of interest here at BYC, I have to admit most of my posts aren’t about chickens. Chickens are what brought me here, but if I stopped keeping them I doubt I’d leave BYC. I learn something every day, some days I do question people’s mental health, usually followed by questioning my own! .

Last night’s little escapade showed a problem with public forums that will never be preventable. It also showed the best of public forums which happened to be those of us who jumped in and reported it. It was mere minutes for that troll to disappear, I was really impressed! BYC staff rocks!

It isn't really that bad. True. But it is off-putting when serious threats turn... silly? Is that the word??? Or turn into meme-fests. Or insult sessions. Or just writing off others' experiences. Not what I've ever experienced here.

I experienced the same thing a couple of months ago and was called a troll. I went to 'conversation' with the person and received multiple 'F' bombs concerning my character. Another one added to my 'ignore' list.
