This is why I detest modern technology....

I guess as the OP of this thread, I'll add that I have been on many forums over the years and too many of them are destroyed by trolls and moderators who don't moderate. Although my topic is not specifically about chickens, it is posted in the random thoughts section, which is where I thought it would belong. I enjoy talking about other issues with people who have the common experience of owning chickens, but maybe a topic not specifically about chicken care or behavior, etc...

In keeping with the "This is why I detest modern technology..." thread, let me say that I suspect people who hide behind an anonymous name and make 1 or 2 posts on a forum to throw a bomb on a thread, are probably the same people who would never think about making such a comment in person face-to-face. Our modern tech allows people to misbehave online in ways that would never be tolerated in "real" life where your identity is known to all.

Obviously throwing a text bomb in an online forum is not welcomed, but how many stories do you hear of young people posting questionable pictures of themselves, or others, and that might resurface later to bite them in the behind. I made my fair share of mistakes when I was a teenager, but thank goodness none of it was posted on the internet to follow me the rest of my life.

Also, sometimes a text message may not be completely clear and the receiver might take the message in a negative way. Without the benefit of observing someone face-to-face and judging their body language, a simple comment could come off as a criticism, or worse, to someone else. That's too bad, but it happens.

Anyway, if the BYC moderators jumped on someone online trolling and scrubbed them from our memories, all the more power to them. We need to use modern tech to our advantage, and keep these forums troll free as much as possible. So I will also thank the BYC moderators for keeping this forum open to people to express their viewpoints while at the same time call a foul shot or penalty when needed.

One way or another your threads are always among the best!!!

How about people have always been pretty unpleasant and if modern technology is to blame for anything it's that it has made it easier for people to demonnstrate that unpleasantness.
Most of the comments in the thread I would agree with in knee jerk mode but having endured railway commuting many years ago where people got on the train and opened a newspaper and effectively hid from the other passengers until they got off the train, that doesn't seem much different from people glued to their mobile phones.
It used to be "go look in a book" for advice and information. Now it's ask google.
Just different sources.
The Swiss had last time I looked more guns per capita than any other country, but they don't have anything like the same level of gun crime.
I think blaming technology might be a bit short sighted when one considers that people are the ones making use of it.

What I enjoy about having the internet is now its much easier to fact check what our parents, elders, teachers, peers tell us as true. Sometimes they dont realize they are misinformed, but Ive always enjoyed that about living in the modern age, instead of looking through books for countless hours for answers, we get it at the click of the mouse :)

I do agree kids seem to have their heads in their smartphones more than when I was a kid (Im 29). But the younger generation seems more humble than my generation, Im always surprised to see how polite they are and considerate. Im sure every generation has its setbacks, but hopefully good is constantly prevailing and the new age is bringing more good than bad 😊

That's what I said (more or less, and not nearly as eloquently): it's a tool.

For me, the difference is that today people will be glued to their mobile phones while at a family gathering, or out a restaurant, etc... Back in the day I used to take the metro to get around, and I would be reading the newspaper like you mentioned. But when I got to my destination, the paper was put away and I was engaged with people.

The Swiss used to mandate all men serve in the military for 2 years. I don't know if that is still true. In general, I find people trained with the military in firearms are not typically the people you associate with gun crimes. Not where I live anyway.

I spent my first summer in college studying in southern France. My French instructor was a WWII vet. He told me a story about the Swiss, that if not true, is still well repeated.

He said the Germans were marching on the Swiss and stationed themselves in the mountains while their general went down to the Swiss town to talk to the Swiss general. The German general said to the Swiss, "I have 200,000 men ready to take your town, and you only have 100,000 men to defend it. What are you going to tell your men?" The Swiss general looks the German general in the eye and says, "I will tell them to shoot twice!" At which point the German general turned his men around and left the Swiss town without a shot being fired.

I don't know if that story was true or not, but I'll give a WWII vet the curtesy he deserves.

I agree to a point. However, we have all heard how these social media tech companies actively seek to get users hooked on their platform. I just think they have gone too far and have been too successful. I don't normally fault a company for being successful, but if social media was considered a drug destroying lives, then I would not be supporting the drug dealer either. I think lots of modern tech is destroying our social fabric, but, I will admit, I am getting on in age (61) and lots of things used to be better in the past for me. But you are right in that people are choosing to go down that path.

Being a young millennial, I tend to agree. I think technology is supposed to be helping us be more streamlined. I think some areas are in not need for dependence of phone.
I am not a fan how Disney making park guest use their phone to plan everything. Make a reservation of a attraction, restaurant, even self serve eateries! That is annoying! Everything about it, I am on vacation! I should not be on my phone all times while vacationing!

My other rant are big corporations using AI to call for customer service. I NEED to speak to an actual human! Please!!! Ugh

Yes, as an RN, the internet was a most valuable source of health related information. But we had been trained on what sources were dependable, like Mayo clinic, and those that did not carry much weight, like maybe aunt Mayo and her folk cures. When your license in on the line, you want to be sure your internet source has been well vetted and dependable.

hopefully good is constantly prevailing and the new age is bringing more good than bad 😊

:love Love your optimism. I'm just ranting about some things that I think are making things worse, and maybe some people will consider how to better use their modern tech.

:he Oh yeah, how could I forget that?! I remember when calling customer service meant you would get to talk to a real person about your issue. I get so frustrated nowadays when I contact customer service and it's an AI bot pretending to be a person. I have received some really stupid responses. The AI is not up to everything, and when you call customer service, that usually means something has gone wrong with the system to start with.
