We have so many different varieties here-I've seen redtails, Coopers, Sharp Shinned and peregrine falcons. Once, back when I still had my guineas, one flew through the yard after a guinea, but she flew under the deck and evaded him so I love the fact that (so far, my time will come one day, I'm sure) I have never had a predator loss. Best thing I ever did for my girls was start keeping a rooster. My boys are why I keep saying that you don't need a human-aggressive rooster in order for him to be aggressive when he needs to be. Bad boys don't get to stay here.

It was really something to see the humongous wingspan on that hawk today! He was no lightweight, to be sure.

Your beautiful boys did their jobs! We have hawks in my area as well and I'm always wondering if my boys would do their job in the same situation. They are always on alert & giving the girls warnings, so I can only hope so. So glad everyone is safe!

I've had the privilege of watching Chief scream a challenge from the middle of the yard when the Cooper came cruising by one day. And then to see all three of my other boys go completely berserk in their yard at the sight of that little Cooper. Of course, the Cooper couldn't know that the other three boys couldn't join Chief in any kind of fray on account of their enclosure. But it sure gave him more than enough food for thought that he soon abandoned the idea and took off from the tree that he had perched in to look the situation over from.

There is simply nothing so heart lifting as seeing your roosters do what God put them on this earth to do. Protect their families!

I'm very proud of my boys. I'm sure it wasn't the first attack, but I didn't witness the one a couple weeks ago. Everyone was underneath the coop with Suede going off like a fire alarm inside with his girls and Ike standing at the edge of the coop with all his women underneath. They didn't come out for a couple hours. I'm sure it was a hawk, maybe the same one, even. Even Zane will go crazy alarming inside from his cage, so even though he doesn't have any girls to protect ( nor could he if he wanted to, being crippled), he does contribute since he can see out two windows from his vantage point.

Do your two roosters get along with each other? Would they fight each other?

We're wondering whether to let some of our nice roobabies stay, we've heard some roosters will get along just fine.

"Going off like a fire alarm" is just right! Don't you love it?! Nothing gets past an alert rooster!
