This just makes me sick!

ETA: I do NOT blame the FF... just the county that implemented the rules that the FF cant step in..
The FF are just doing their job , and really have NO choice in the matter, literally..

With out knowing the why behind the reason they did not pay we are playing armchair quarterback. As an example I hear about foreclosures and how the bank is responsible because of a technicality when the truth is the person mortgaged the land to where they were upside down and treated their home equity as a piggy bank. I bet they did not pay because of the obvious they did not want to. The animal loss is indeed sad. They should have done something if they showed up.

I must say though if they can afford to own a house, pay property taxes and all the costs associated with ownership they could have paid $75.00 most assuredly.

I think they should have put out the fire and have the homeowner the bill. I'm not sure about all of California, but we have firefighters around here that work for the state who will respond to any rural fire because of the potential of it turning into a full-blown wildfire. Our property taxes pay for that. If you don't pay your property taxes, then you could lose your home. So, most people pay their property taxes.

Let me see if I got this right. You want me as a firefighter to risk my life go in to a burning building to save your beloved pets that you wont go in to save. did i get that right?
Then you don't want to pay your firefighting fee until you have a fire. Do you buy fire insurance after the fire? Your county has decided not to include the fee in your property taxes, so that's something that you could change. Do you get electric service if you don't pay for it ? Do you get water if you don't pay for it ?
The fire dept. came out and no one was trapped or injured and to see that it did not spread. They did enough
But i bet there was a line of people to pay the fee the next day

I have to agree with this

I also have to agree. I'm sorry but 75 a year for fire service is not that expensive and I'm not the kind of person to normally condones things like this but its not right for people to get away with not covering themselves. It would be nice if the county made it so you could include it in your taxes. My husband is a volunteer firefighter and emt and let me tell you that their dept eats alot of the cost for people who they know cannot afford to pay the bill. The people were to cheap and lazy to do something that would benefit them in the event. You have to grow up at some point and take responsibility for your actions or lack thereof.

Exactly my thoughts, if the fire department had fought the fire anyways, what message would it send to the rest of the people? "Yeah we want you to pay $75 a year but even if you don't, we'll still fight the fire."

Wow, sad, so sad. Those poor people. Everyone here says "pay the fee, it's only about $1.50 a week". But there are MANY who can only afford to feed themselves, and barely anything else. I'm not saying that was their situation, I don't know, but really people, the poor should sit there and watch the fire department while every single thing is burned to the ground? Wet clothes can be washed, some things could have been saved if the fire department had stepped in, yet instead I GAURANTEE those people are now getting financial assistance, FROM US, to replace those items and have a place to live............... So, how do you like paying for them? I mean, yes, $75 is a little amount to those of us that can afford it, but for those who cannot, it's a world away, and they have no choice. I personally think that is wrong, just do away with the fire department if EVERY person cannot afford it. Don't discriminate against the poor. This country is just getting more and more financially racist.

Again, I don't know their situation, but as someone who was at one time a starving poor person (only had $20 a week for food for 2), I feel bad for people put in this situation. Food? Or fire insurance????

let me get this strait, you rate your services up there with the electric company or an insurance salesman?

Not say someone who risks their life for the greater good like police officers and the military. Or should we go to a system where the police and military only protect people who can pay a fee. I've heard of that. Pay for protection. The mob uses it.

I would rather not live in a country where the only people who deserve protection are the people who use money to buy it.
