This just makes me sick!

I'm not sure what would happen either if a mistake were made, but I bet it would be a lot more than bad press. I know if it were me and I had paid my $75 and the computer said I hadn't, and the FD came and stood and watched my home burn to the ground without making an effort because the computer was wrong, I, who have never sued anybody in my life, would file a lawsuit so fast it would make your head spin.

I think a lot of the problem here is just not th inking the process through.

Calling in a fire isn't like ordering Dominoes. "Hey, I need 2 pumper trucks and 7 firemen to 123 old farm road"

The equipment must be purchased and maintained. The men must be recruited and trained.
A crew responding to a rural fire is going to need slightly different equipment than responding to a fire in an area with hydrants.

So, how about the residents of the city pay an extra $1000 or so on their property taxes to buy all the equimpent. Then, all the people who had rural fires can split the cost for the equipment.

"Bob, you know that the ol' pumper finally quit and we had to buy a new one. You and Steve were the only ones with fires this year, so you've got to split the $300K. Better luck next year"

*Slightly off-subject* (but related)

The county next to me just purchased two new ambulances, fully decked
at $99,500 each. And that was a bargain, they were demonstrator models.

We would like to have new(er) trucks, but just can't afford it right now. We
put our money in new radios and bunker gear.

Another small college town near us voted down a levy to maintain their local
police force. They only had two full time police. Now they will only have one.
As long as there is no crime that won't be a problem, will it?

There is a real cost in the equipment we use.

Spook
