I was getting a couple of dozen eggs per day and selling out at $5.00/doz. Of course that was in the suburbs, I really doubt that they'd pay that in the country. I don't think that I would have bothered keeping that many hens with all the work that it takes as well as upkeep costs, for less. Half my hens were not producing, just living the good life.
I would have asked her "Too much? Compared to what?" when she said she could get them at the grocery for less I would tell her "if that is the kind of eggs you want why are you bothering me?"
In Oregon is any where from $3.50 - $5.00/dozen. My neighbors have seen my new chicks and have stopped by to tell me they will buy eggs as soon as they are laying!
