this was in my paper today.....................

They probably think it is like Mexico due to the people they see more so than due to the animals themselves.

Either way, I welcome animals anyday.

An 11-year-old boy was chased home from school by a rooster, according to his mother, who did not want his name published.

bahahah.
some people are just stupid and dont know how to handle this kinda stuff.
I bet it made The world a WAYYY better place about hearing about CHICKENS disturbing a city. oh for goodness sakes dont they have gang violence to stop or something.

That wasn't what I was discussing - I was discussing that calling someone a racist because they state either and opinion OR a fact about another culture - doesn't make them a racist.

If you don't live in LA or have never lived in LA and have never been to TJ - then maybe you do have a hard time relating to these people's observations.

I can relate though - and that doesn't make me a racist.

Hey man, I lived in Texas, and last time I checked, Texas and California ARE Mexico, and not the other way around

If you don't want to live in Mexico, don't live in California and Texas, two formally Mexican states who are being "reclaimed" by their people, not the other way around.

I personally liked having my neighbors making tamales on the front poorch and roosters crowing every morning. Living in Texas, I didn't expect anything different. Mexicans are connected to the earth. When they kill a chicken, they use their BARE HANDS. I have Mexican neighbors here in Oregon, and they laugh at us everytime we get out a cleaver to kill chickens. I often wonder what is wrong with white America that we can't accept what life really is: eat fresh food, poop, work hard, eat fresh food, poop, work hard. Seems like every other ethnicity gets it but us

That said, I can understand how city people are disturbed by country living behaviors. They do, however, need a good dose of reality OTHER THAN sex, drugs, and drive-byes.

yeah CA is like that but its not too bad where i live

Ok, I was going to stay out of this but I can't. As you know I live NEW Mexico, on the border with El Paso, TX, and Juarez, Mexico. The comment about reminding the fellow of Mexico was not a racist comment. The culture of Mexico IN AREAS, is quite different than it is here in the USA. Yes, they have chickens roaming the yards, streets, wherever they can find food and water or a shady spot to rest. The guy has probably been South of our Border and that is all he could think of to relate it to.
If the animals in that neighborhood are really that far out of control, then something needs to be done about. If I couldn't control my animals, whether it be the dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, horses, whatever then I should move to where I have more room and my inability to properly care for my animals will not encroach on others rights.
I seriously doubt the child was chased home by a rooster, but we all know how much damage a rooster can do if it does attack you. An 11 year old child is pretty close to the ground and could have easily, very easily, had serious facial injuries done by an attacking rooster that should have been in a proper enclosure.
I live in a rural area, I have acres of desert between me and my neighbors, but that doesn't mean I allow my animals to "free range" their way to others land. They don't allow it either.
I would say those people in that area are not good representations of animal ownership and it is people like them that do end up in the news for encroaching on other's rights and then make all of us good owners look bad.
Let's not focus on one issue of that article, let's look at the big picture. People can't be expected to tolerate living with animals roaming their streets and property. We have leash laws for dogs, cats can't leave the property either.
We need to be the best examples we can, so none of us end up in the local news for rude and careless behavior with our own animals.

I agree with Writer. It seems to me that the neighbors are just complaining because the animals aren't contained properly... and being as they're in a city, I don't blame them for not liking the roosters either. Although the article makes it seem like animal owners/backyard chicken raisers are the devil and will ruin your neighborhood

and that's actually really sad...

I used to live in an area in Newport Beach, Ca, with multi-million dollar properties that is also zoned to have animals. Most of the properties have some acerage and most people had horses and chickens, as I did. All was well.

Then we got new neighbours.

These new neighbours imediately complained to their neighbour on the other side that the roosters, contained in a designer chicken house well away from the houses, were bothering them. This particular resident, the one with the roosters, also has a mini-vineyard. Next morning the complaining neighbors (who sleep in late) found on their doorstep one dead rooster - and one bottle of wine! Game on!

The new neighbours quickly realised they were dealing with and eccentric and pulled their horns in. They actually became good friends and now there are grapes growing in the new neighbours horse corral.

All is well.
