Thistlewick Smallholding - Chickens & Sheep (for now)

Update quickly - my husband had a motorcycle accident, he is okay but I have been on nurse duty for the past few weeks.

Chickens are good, we have suffered some hawk losses, I think - but I have something in the order of 60 chickens and they don't always show up all the time, so hard to tell??

Getting rid of 6 cockerels today, they are all coming into their hormones and while they all get along, they are starting to harry the girls. None of that is ever allowed. Cracker is still a fine gentleman and coming into being a wonderful leader, so far. Will have 3 remaining total.

Keeping Oscar - let him out today and he's disappeared, so that is... interesting....

And keeping 1 Welsummer Cockerel in hopes of possibly creating speckled olive eggers. Next year though.

Tilly broody. And now that Tilly is, Ginger wants to be too LOL THOSE TWO GIRLS!!! lol

No babies for them this time. Fake eggs. lol

Goodbye Miss Pecky -- you were a darling to me, but nasty sneaky rapist to my girls, they don't like you :p

Same here; I nope his convalescence goes smoothly (for both of you). 😉

Sorry to hear about the hawk predation! We’ve had one on and off in the high hemlocks behind the house, but the crows have been successful so far in harrying it off. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 for Oscar!

oscar showed up that evening for roost and he went to his same spot he roosted at before he was separated (he was separated within view of everyone)

Spitfire, his little duck that he was aggressively mating (the reason for the separation to begin with!) was SO HAPPY to see him, it was charming and adorable and he seems to be cured. He hasn't tried to mate anyone. He is getting his bearings.

He has always been a very good boy other than his predilection for the duck -- so crossing fingers!!

He is being very darling, and very sweet to me anytime I am nearby, coming up to say hello quickly. Cracker is the big boss man and has no time to bother him as long as he's minding his Ps and Qs haha

Hubs named the Welsummer boy Wellington, since I said he did not previously have a name but now is a permanent resident.

I need to get a good pic of Cracker now, he's matured into a gorgeous Cockerel, braw and tall and just stunning. I HOPE he stays good and doesn't turn like his papa Chuck did.

He was raised in the flock though, with adult hens -- Chuck did not. So crossing fingers.

I am struggling with deciding what to do about the food. Right now I'm feeding them in the mornings, bc I didn't want that 1 rat to become 20 rats.

I am just super lazy and don't want to feed every day lol

I will figure something out! I don't want a treadle feeder, I might go back to hanging ones, though those still get food billed out.

There is no easy solution, the best solution is doing what I am doing now. But they behave differently, they don't wander/forage as much when I feed them daily. They just hang around the hen house hoping for food.

So not sure what to do.

Anyway here is Oscar yesterday evening -- @wrathsfarm he grew his tail! :)

Oscar is looking very nice. Stunning copper and loving his tail at the moment. Let's hope it stays down below 45 degrees as he matures.
How old is he now?

omg yall this morning

I'm out feeding them all and changing the ducks water and while I am waiting for the duck pond to fill up, I observe Oscar delicately, quietly and *very* smoothly dance for Spitfire.

SHE SQUATTED FOR HIM LOLLLLLLLL

He mated her quickly, gently, one little wiggle and off of her.

She wiggled her tail and made the happy head bob.

OKAY YOU TWO GO ON AHEAD THEN LMAOOOOOOO

I think Spitfire thinks she's a chicken. :lau :lau :lau
