I'm sorry but there is no way on earth that anyone is going to be able to read the tattoo accurately enough from that photo to be able to tell you for certain 'who' your horse was. (I did fiddle with the image somewhat in Irfanview etc, but I think the horse's tattoo would have probably been borderline - at best - to read even if one were there in person)

Remember him for the horse you knew him as.

Condolences,

Pat

thanks for the help i was going to try and get his race carrier and pedigree for my mom for christmas.

First sorry you lost your horse but for anyone that would like a list of reading Tattoos on TB's I have it saved as a link at home. I'll be happy to post it.

There should be a letter somewhere with in it that states they year they were born. My OTTB was born in 93 and has a W that stands for 93.

No, actually they're usually not tattooed until/unless they're expected to race - often when they enter training, but sometimes only in preparation for their first race. Of course not all tattooed horses ever actually *do* race. (for the poster who asked 'why' - it's to ensure that people don't run 'ringers' under false names for shady betting schemes).

The lip tattoo for TBs is a letter followed by 5 numbers, and represents the horse's unique 7-digit registration. In the registration number itself, the 1st 2 digits tell the year the horse was foaled, and in the lip tattoo that part is represented by a letter instead -- so a horse foaled in 1999 might have the registration number "9912345", for instance, and his lip tattoo would be C12345. (1997 was the most recent A year, and they go in simple alphabetical order, so you can figure out what the letter would be for any other year).

Once you CORRECTLY have all the digits of the registration number, you can pay money to the Jockey Club to have them look up what the horse's registered name was, and then if you want you can find out if he ever raced, what if anything he won, his pedigree and his relatives' race records, etcetera. However this only works if you have ALL FIVE DIGITS AND THE LETTER right. (You can pay extra money to have multiple searches done by the JC if just one or maybe two digits are somewhat ambiguous -- like if you're not sure if it's C12345 or C12346 or C12348 -- to see if any of the multiple possibilities match your horse's color and markings; however you'd need a lot more info than it will ever be possible to get from that photo, unfortunately).

Once you know the registered name of the horse, it is inexpensive to find out race records, and you can often find the pedigree (or much of it) online for free. Unfortunately that probably isn't going to happen for you this time.

Hope this helps,

Pat
