Those funny laws... Gotta wonder what lead to their creation!

In the mountains in CA you can't keep chickens.

What is up with the not selling dyed chicks or duckling laws? Michigan has one to.

A lot of states have those laws to stop dyed chicks being sold as novelties for kids to play with.
Is the dye harmful? I can see why chicks being treated like toys is wrong... but what's the harm in dyeing them, if the dye is... uh, searching for the right word... eh, okay for fluff contact?

They are dyed in the shell before hatching with food coloring so that freaks some people out but it is harmless if done right. Several threads on it in the hatching section. It is banned to keep it from being used as a sales gimmick but some states just ban dyeing all together to be simple.

Some areas it was harmful so they moved to food colored dye only allowed. The main reason for the law was because of animal cruelty. Between the kids playing with them, fake grass in baskets killing them (can't digest it), and the dye not being there when they grew feathers (not as cute) being let loose or not cared for it was the only way they could control it.

In Arkansas:

Fayetteville: It is illegal to kill "any living creature." (Yep, I'm guilty... I knew I shouldn't have gone fishing there...)

Little Rock (A.K.A. 'Pebble'): It is unlawful to walk one’s cow down Main Street after 1:00 PM on Sunday. (Now if only I had a cow....)
