those of you in the middle of nowhere with internet...

I literally live "in the middle of nowhere". Cable is not available here...DSL is not available....The finally put a cell tower up about a mile and half up the road but still don't get cell service because of the hills between the tower and here. So I have dialup thru peoplepc. My highest connection speed? 26.4 Kbps Not to mention, if I am on the internet for 4 hours, Peoplepc disconnects the internet (no matter what I am doing) and I have to log back on. They say this is a safety feature but when you have dialup and it takes 6 hours for the security updates to download, it sucks that I can't just leave the thing connected and go to bed...NOOOO I have to stay up and watch the computer in case it loses the internet during the download.

I would be extremely happy if Frontier (just bought Verizon in WV) would put DSL thru here.

edited for spelling.

I haven't read all the post but Hughsnet says they go anywhere as long as you have a clear view of the south skies. We have dsl available here but we are the last one on this line and there are no ports open at the moment. We can get satalite but it's so expensive.

We have WildBlue. Better then dial up. We pay around $99 a month, but that also includes our long distance calls and unlimited local calls.

Only trouble we had was when DS was doing tutoring with Sylvan online. No matter what we did the tutors had trouble hearing him. there was a 3 second delay in the voice and sound relay.

There is no DSL offered here. Only dial up. But we found out Verizon Wireless has a little USB plug in that does wireless internet. I'm pretty sure it works just about everywhere. They don't advertise it all that much. But I would locate the nearest verzion store and talk to them. It does work great. Except I hate the 5GB limit. But I believe all wireless has that.

It's $59 a month. Which in my opinion is expensive.

I'm not crazy about verzion. But it's all that is offered in my area or phone or internet.

We are three lousy miles outside of a major city and we have no DSL or cable here. We went with Verizon Wireless with the USB modem. It's not cheap, but you can take it anywhere and here it works great! Very reliable and surprisingly fast. I only notice a slow down during peak hours on Friday night and Saturday mornings, and then it is still only minor. We have a 5 GB limit, but have only come close to that once when we were uploading the contents of our computer to a backup service. Other than that we are on all the time and have had no other troubles.

we use wildblue at home and at the office we have hughesnet. we do not have access to cable/dsl too far out in the country. both office and home are much better than dial up any day. we have not had any problems, except for exceeding the fair access policy threshold. only at the office this will happen. we have 7 computers hooked to hughesnet. we could use verizon, but we have 4 computers at home and it would not be very cost effective unless we went with the hub thinging they advertise. what's it called, hot spot or something.

We actually have DSL, but it's so slow (1Mbps down with a seriously throttled up) and unreliable that I'm considering switching. Frustratingly, there is a major fiber cable that runs right through this area, but we can't get access to it.

My Verizon cell gets 3 bars here, my iPad gets 3 bars of 3G (when I turn on the cellular feature, which isn't often). 3 bars is okay, but the AT&T drops out a lot (surprise, surprise!). On the road between our house and town (37 miles) there are 4 spots where the connection drops completely because of the curving mountain ridge the road follows. I could probably use a Verizon wireless card instead of DSL, but the DSL is probably more solid than the cell coverage here.

We tried WildBlue .. it was HORRIBLE .. slower than dialup .. bla bla bla ..

So, we take DH's verizon wireless card off his laptop .. plug it into the PC with a long cable .. hang the air card out the window .. and WaLaaaa ... internet!

It's a temporary fix, but works for now

We have Hughesnet here. Not the best service but its all that's available in my area. No DSL No cable and no cell service. I have the 2nd tier service which is 350 MB at a rate of 150-300kbs a day and when my son down loads some music its done for. The service also slows down between 5pm and 9pm every night when there is a lot of people on line.
This is much better than the 4kbs I was getting on dial up.
