Those of you who are in city limits and cannot own roos what do you do

Ok, roos do not just crow in the morning. They crow in the morning to wake the girls up, they crow when they see me because I have food, they crow when predators come near, they crow to get the girls in bed at night. Mine crows when he is not receiving his share of attention from human folk too.

Oh I like your style

Roos begin at sunup, so my outlaw routine is the following......... He sleeps with his wife and a couple of girlfriends in a semi-soundproof Dogloo. I'm an early riser, so I grab him and put him in the garage at 6:30 am in a cage. I let him out at 9, or 10 on a weekend. He freeranges all day long, so I don't feel terrible about his time in the cage. It just depends on the roo how much they crow during the day. Mine is a silkie, I believe bantam breeds have slightly quieter crows. My neighbors are so wonderful, they actually lie to me and say "Oh sweetie, we can't hear him!"

I don't ever ever allow my dogs to bark, so I figure it evens out. He won't ever crow after the sun begins to go down either.

LOL I have paper route and on one of the country roads no matter what time of day it is you can hear it crow. My DD loves listening to it.

Oh MY. My rooster crows before dawn, from inside the coop. Then he crows as I walk up to the coop, just about dawn. Then he crows when he gets out of the coop, just to show that he can crow. He crows during the day when he hears another crow in the distance. They crow back and forth to each other for a while.

Then he crows, from inside the coop after they all go to roost, in the middle of the night if I turn on the porch light. He crows if the dogs bark.

It's a good thing I LIKE his crow. Although I do look around kinda guiltily, and I've asked the back neighbors (the closest ones) if he bothers them. The man of the house laughed and said, "Not to worry!" The woman of the house, separately, said, "He's such a pretty rooster - I hardly hear him at all."

And right after that, he crowed. She burst out laughing and said, "Okay, I heard that.... but it doesn't bother us at all."

Nice, lying neighbors.

As I sit here listening to the dog just down the road barking endlessly..... I must remind myself how much more obnoxious a rooster crowing is

... and yes...the -dog-does-it-all-the-time!!!!!!! Before I had chickens my other neighbor worried that we would be annoyed by his rooster. I like roosters anyway, but to be fair, he was closer than the dog and not near so loud. Our priorities are really messed up about this.... (I like dogs by the way, and have 3 but really.....

Oh, the shame of it all! Until this past weekend I had 9 lovely laying hens... and, get this...about 11 roos! Yes, I have been known to take an extra roo, or 6, from a friend of mine who lives in the city. This past weekend I re-homed 4 of the roos, so my ratio is a bit better. I took the BCM roos my friend hatched and promptly fell in love with ALL 5 of them. Is there no hope? Yes, we live on 10 acres in "the country" so the constant crowing is not a problem... in fact, I love it. Oh, I forgot to add in a roo of mine that lives on my neighbor's property with her goats. Yes, he was first in line the other day to go into the milking room. Sigh... poor confused guy!

I live in the country and can have as many roosters as I want to annoy my citified neighbors with. I hatch out hundreds of chicks, and half are roosters. I sell the hens for $10 and the roosters for $8 when they are 2-4 months old. The roosters sometimes sell out before the hens.

There is a large hispanic/asian/russian/arab population in the general area. It's hilarious to watch the old grandmother yell at her grandkids in languages that I can't understand, while she's picking out which rooster she wants for dinner. The way I figure, commercial hatcheries kill most of their rooster chicks off the day they are hatched, I give mine month of free range time, and the possibility of being sold to a backyard flock. (For every hen you buy from a commercial hatchery, 1 rooster chick is generally fed to a chipper shredder. Not a joke!!!
