I was reading an article about buckeyes and it was saying a difference between rhode island reds and buckeyes is that buckeyes have a slate underfeather color on their backs, while RIRs are red all the way down on their feathers. So, I looked at our buckeyes and the youngsters (3-4 months) all have the slate color but the mature hens are red all the way through. Then I looked at my RIR hens and they have the slate color, not red all the way down to the skin like the article said. So, anyone else have buckeyes or Rhode Islands and want to weigh in on this? It seems trivial but I'm curious...
