I am looking for some info on March hatches. March 1 to March 31. If you would please answer a few questions I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

1. How many eggs set ? how many at lockdown ? how many hatched ?

2. How many were shipped eggs ? how many were local eggs ?

3. Broody Hen or incubator ?

4. How many of the chicks that hatched were male ? female ? ( I know it may be a bit early to tell, a best guess is fine )

5. How long from first pip to last chick hatched ?

6. Last but not least, Did you leave all of the chicks in the incubator until all had hatched ?

1. 40/39/8 I had SERIOUS humidity issues because of a bad hydrometer/thermometer...

2. 0/40
3. Bator
4. 2 male 6 female no doubt.
5. 24 hours and I shut it down. ALL the rest had died fully formed not pipped.
6. No. I took them out 4 at a time.

That's almost as bad to post as it was to experience!
NOW...tell me what you're doing?!?!?! I NEEEEED to know!

2. 0/16

4. NO IDEA ( I know they are chickens, does that count)
5. 48 hours
6. No, I took the hatched ones out after 24 hours. Had to stop the egg ball they were playing

I didn't mean to pop in then run, I am a caregiver to my Mom who is literally dying in my living room. It gets a little hectic around here at times.

There really is no reason for my post other than I wanted to get an overall picture of the successes and failures BYC folks had in a 1 month period.

After further thought.....

I think what is bothering me are the number of chicks that get to day 21 and yet fail to hatch. I was thinking that if I had real numbers and circumstances that I could better understand why so many fail at that point.

Over 60 eggs set, went down to about 30, and only 11 hatched.

2. How many were shipped eggs ? how many were local eggs ?
All but about 12 were shipped eggs, 26 were driven home for 3 hours, the rest were from my own flock.

3. Broody Hen or incubator ?
Incubator - One forced air, one still air.

4. How many of the chicks that hatched were male ? female ? ( I know it may be a bit early to tell, a best guess is fine )
Nope, not too early to tell for me - 4 male, 4 female, 3 unknown but will be known in another week.

5. How long from first pip to last chick hatched ?
2 days

No, I had a lot of weird problems with the Marans, so I pulled chicks out twice I think.

Don't worry of this though - The main problem I had was that ALL the eggs in the still air failed because of the incubator, and a lot of my Wheaten Marans eggs just plain weren't fertile.

1. 10 Cayuga duck eggs
3 eggs from my flock that were mixes of Dark Cornish and EE
8 Silkies

2. 8 Silkies were shipped, 3 eggs mine, and ducks were neighbors

3. Incubator, Hova Bator 1602N with turner

4. Ducks 2-unknown sexes 1 died trying to get out of the shell it was the first one and I wished afterward I would have helped a little and I did help the other two pop the end open, they had to crawl out.
Mine- all 3 hatched were and still are in great health, looks like 2 girls and a boy.
Silkies-4 hatched, one died just before the hatch (pretty good since I only ordered 6 eggs to begin with) and the sexes, ask me in a couple more months

5. Ducks hatched on day 27 all within 24-hours
My eggs on day 19 within 12 hours
Silkies about 48-hours from pip to being done

6. No. I removed the ducks once I knew they were done because they were knocking the crap out of the other eggs and making a mess. I took out my 3 homegrowns as soon as they were done and there was no sign of the Silkies starting but I did it lickey split and the temp/humidity barely dropped. The Silkies I left until all three were out even though they were keeping us awake half the night.

Daido, I am sorry about your mom. My husband's mother passes away last year in January and I understand what you must be going through. She does appreciate being with you though and it means so much for them to die with those they love around them. I am sending loving thoughts your way for you family.

OK, for my March hatch, I set 24 eggs. Still 24 at lockdown. 9 eggs hatched.
All 24 were shipped through the USPS.
Brinsea Eco 20 incubator.
I'm hoping for 50/50, can't tell yet.
First pip to last hatched--around 24 hours.
No. I took out the first 5 after they were dry. The Brinsea gets a bit crowded at hatch time, but it comes back up to correct temp. and humidity very quickly.

Ok we set 12 eggs... And the next day we put 6 under my sisters broody NHR. And kept 6 for us to do in my sisters incubator. We did the dry incubation method. It was us against the hen!

and she won! We hatched 4 of our 6 and all six of hers hatched a full 24 hours before ours! Hers where on the 21st day. My sister checked her in the morning and she had 4 fuzzy chicks and 2 eggs by 1 pm all the chicks had hatched under the hen. Ours took forever in the bator and I'd say at least 12-18 hours from 1st to last hatch. We gave all the baby's to the hen cause she was such a good mama. We lost one at about 2 days. But the 9 left are about 2 weeks. Looks like 4 boys and 5 girls.
We did leave all of the chicks in the incubator till hatching was done. And they where shipped from gabbard hatching eggs.
