For about a week my lyla seemed off but was eating and drinking so I chalked it up to stress (new coop moved twice for building plus predator attack) no one was laying now everyone is seeming to get back to normal except her. I sprayed permetherin 2 days ago for lice (everyone got treated) next morning (yesterday) I noticed she was sitting on her bum.not much balance when she moves...if she moves. While at work I researched on here and thought she was eggbound or laying internally. Around 4 my daughter (actually her chicken) noticed she was shivering laying on her side. So I had her start the treatment for eggbound. Warm epsom water for 20-30. Min. When I arrived home from work around 7 we ran another bath and I thought I felt an egg (I’m new to this so who knows) after the bathe she ate some food and I dipped her beak in water to get her to drink a bit. We mixed some tums (for calcium) with her food and some water to make a mash. She seemed to like the tums. No poop in the time she was inside. I went in later figured we would allow her some quiet and she seemed to be pushing. I had my daughter put Vaseline around and in vent a little and she also swears she felt an egg. (She’s 10) this morning I checked....no egg and she’s just laying tail down head down eyes closed. Then she pooped and I was thankful she moved to a towel as I had her out of the cage...omg it stunk so bad. I don’t have a pic bc it was on a blue towel but it was dark with some white....aside from the smell it looked normal. So first poop since she had been in house in 14 hours. So now I’m wondering if she’s egg bound she can’t poop. Soooooo back to square one. She is the only one who is sick. I had a barred rock that had lost her color a week ago but recovered with some electrolytes in water for everyone. I assumed stress factors was the cause. She seem well perky and chirpy like her old self. Last night my Roos comb was purple so I thought crap they r all sick but this morning it’s red and as we speak he’s waking up the neighborhood. She’s the only “sick” so if she’s eggbound can she poop. If not could she be laying internally? Any thoughts or ideas welcomed. Feeding layer crumbles with free choice oyster shells. I need to add we recently integrated some chicks and found on here to mix the chick feed and layer feed together so now I’m wondering if she has too much protein....back to just layer feed....

Spoke with daughter and she said in the middle of the night lyla was chirping so she checked on her and she seemed to be “pushing.” I’m baffled seems to have no balance uses wings for balance when she does move and then immediately lays down with her legs still in stand position as if she just falls forward

2 weeks ago at night she wouldn’t go up to roost only made a nest on floor and tried to sleep there....only 1 chicken was lay8ng at that point and it wasn’t her. We put her on the roost as we were to be getting cold temps and I thought she should be with everyone else. The next morning there was a squishy Shell less egg on the poop board and I have no idea who layed it or dropped it from the roost. She had been eating etc. since so I wasn’t concerned

How old is your sick hen? She looks like she either is having some type of of reproductive disorder (internal layer, salpingitis, egg yolk peritonitis) or is egg bound. If she is over 2, it may be a repro disorder. Has she been laying normal eggs recently? How does her crop feel—empty, full, hard, doughy, or puffy? Can you get her to eat and drink? Since she has pooped some, she may not be eggbound. Keep her warm, and placing her on a moist towel with a heating pad turned to Low would be easier on her than a bath. Have upyou inserted a finger into her vent 1-2 inches to feel for an egg?

Under a year...April chick. Was laying regularly up until a month ago with all the stressors. Seemed one thing after another every week. As of now it seems some are getting back to laying and no stressors for a few weeks now. Crop empty yesterday until she ate some tums/food/water mix but not much. Empty this morning. Won’t eat but did take a few sips of water. The bath seems to help. After she soaks she will eat. Waiting for my daughter to call and update as I had asked her to try again soaking her as afterwards she will eat and drink. Not much but something. She strained so hard to poop this morning and went back to sleep. My daughter did stick her finger in about 1/2 inch maybe less and thinks she felt something hard. Not sure I have a heating pad at home. But miss lyla has always loved a good spa day. Perhaps I will instruct daughter to see if she can go further in with finger to be sure. She was straining and pushing. Her vent looks so tiny and dry compared to my girls that are laying. I know it sounds odd my daughter is doing everything. I am gone from home 6 days a week 12hrs a day. This is her chicken and I gave her the option to try and “save” her or to put her down. Told her she would be responsible for the care needed etc. :) currently lyla is in ICU with 24hr nurse on call :) I had wondered if the permetherin was the cause however no one else is showing signs and the more I thought about it she was sitting on a nest after dark and would roost 2 weeks ago. As I posted above we put her on the roost and next morning there was a squishy egg on the poop board but wasn’t sure who layed it. After that she seems fine. Eating drinking coming and going like any other day up until about Monday (my days mush together) she seemed to keep squatting while she was standing (I had forgotten about this) and I thought it was odd. But we also discovered lice so I also assumed her issues as she slowly started to look. It well was from the lice. So I waited for a warmer evening and I sprayed everyone and the coop Thursday evening. Then this butt sitting Friday morning.

I would have thought that permethrin spray if it was the right concentration, would have harmed her. Getting them very wet might have affected her. If your daughter felt something hard, there might be an egg stuck. Just make sure that she gets warm and dry after a bath. Give another dose of calcium today and a little scrambled egg for D3.

Thank u. I will have her double check to be absolutely positive about feeling something hard as her pooping this morning threw me off yet first poop in 14 hours...I was conflicted. Also another warm spa treatment and more tums mixed with water and food and some scrambled egg if she will eat it :) how long would you think is long enough to “allow her to suffer” in my eyes she is seeming in pain....she tried to snuggle my legs this morning which is unlike her...she hates me. I almost feel bad for her. But I let my daughter make the decision. If she’s going to have chickens she’s going to have to deal with the issues that come about.

This made me sound heartless....I do love lyla she’s great in her way just never snuggles me lol

Lyla seems more alert than this. Morning. We video chatted as daughter checked vent for egg. The only thing she said was she got poop on her finger. I informed her of bath, dry, food with tums and egg....water. We will reassess later

Update:lyla drank quite a bit of her tub water and ate a bit....dried off and is now going to get scrambled egg :) she seems a bit perkier and just wanted to snuggle my daughter. I had her totally bathe her with dawn (what they bathe them in before the fair) so Incase it was the permetherin it’s off her now....just covering the bases. P.s. she was bathed prior to soaking in fresh water that she was drinking lol and am posting the pics she sent me. Fingers crossed she pulls through...
