I want to add 3 chicks to my tiny little flock. I have breeds I'd LOVE to own, but I'm facing reality and I won't be able to own them... I'd love another BO, an Australorp and an Americauna. But how on earth I'd get three chicks of those breeds is beyond me. So I called our local feed store and they told me they have some hatchery chicks in stock - specifically - Golden Sex Links, Golden Wynadottes, Production Reds and some older BR's.
And just so you know, I've tried CL and there are no swaps close by, so I either pay an arm and a leg for 3 chicks from California Hatchery to be shipped all the way to FL (and hope they survive) or I go without chicks.... or I go with these feed store chicks.
I have a 3-year old BR who's doing great and a 3-year-old BO who is not doing well. No one knows what's wrong with her so I've given up trying to figure it out and am just hoping she miraculously recovers....
Sooo.... back to the chicks. Skip 'em or buy 'em? That's the question.
I don't know much about any of the breeds. I looked up "golden wynadotte" but I don't see any listed - think they mean golden laced? I've also read they can be stand-off-ish. Is this true? Is a production red just a hatchery version of a RIR? How about a golden sex-link? Are they friendly?
We have our hens as pets and like to be able to catch them and hold them without them going all tasmanian devil on us. I'd like good layers and friendly hens, and although I know that each bird has their own personality..... some breeds are better suited for the traits I'm looking for than others.
Advice? THANKS!!!!!
(BTW, we are putting the finishing touches on a HUGE brand new coop and I'm itching to fill it with chickens since its a LOT of room for my 2 hens)
