This is our 7 week old EE cockerel. Was hoping some more experienced eyes could give their thoughts on what breeds are in his makeup. Also I'm also curious if I put him (eventually) with my Barred Rocks to breed what are my chances of getting a blue egg layer? 50/50 or better? Thank you for any input.

He is half silkie, the dark skin, comb, crest, earlobe and fifth toe seal that deal, depending on what he was probably mixed with however I'm not sure if he'd have a colored eggs gene :0 and I could be totally wrong cause egg genetics has been something I haven't looked into, but I was under the impression that blue layer x brown layer would make green/olive/sage? :D

Thank you! I thought the blue earlobe was due to having a blue egg gene? I'm not well versed on egg genetics either lol.

I would think Mosaic is unlikely because they're uncommon breed. In theory he *could* have part Easter Egger, but I definitely wouldn't assume that. His shanks aren't too feathered so I'm going to doubt D'Uccle or Cochin even though that's what my mind went to first. The blue earlobes are a trait of Silkies which lay cream/white eggs. Blue earlobes are not indicative of blue egg color. To my knowledge, most colored egg layer have red earlobes

ahh yes if silkies have blue lobes then that explains it - mosaics do as well and he has the spots so I thought it could be part mosaic but yes, very uncommon.

Ok so he's a hybrid but not necessarily an Easter Egger. Darn I really did want that blue egg gene. Although I will still put him with my Barred Rocks and hopefully have beautiful babies. So he is part silkie for sure and maybe the rest will just always remain a mystery.
