Thoughts on corn in poultry feeds.

The closest place for me to get decent feed is about 120 miles one way. I did the math, figuring trailer rental, gas, etc... I can save about $20-$30 per ton, or spend the money and just go with really good feed.

Eric, one of the things I like about sunrise is transparency, Anthony will share with me who he buys his ingredients from and which he grows himself. And I'm one of those nerds who'll actually check out the farms and their neighbors to assess my risk.

one 50# bag = $40 in freight.. 10-40 bags $180. That's from VA to TN.

Ya, I think the best rate I have seen on a 50lb bag was about $26.00 from VT to the mid-Atlantic states. Pallet quantities (10-50 bags) run about $250/pallet.

Our typical organic products are about $25/bag, and non-gmo products are about $15/bag. So, the small order fright rates can double or triple the overall cost :he

@rjohns39- We are also very transparent with our products. We have even had customers come to the mill and mix their own feed. They loved it!! (supervised obviously :D)
From looking at your web site I suspected as much. Sorry you haven't heard more from the corn haters, they are out here, but generally they view it in terms of human digestion and consider it a filler.

I don't mind corn. I'm even pro-GMO. I might feel differently about the amount of corn in my feed if I were breeding and showing white birds, who can tend to take on a yellow cast from too much corn. It's soy that bothers me, and other legumes used in place of it. I don't mind *some* amount of soy in a feed, but I feel really strongly that I want animal protein in my chicken feed, and not just soy making up most of the protein content.

I'm fine with ingredients that meet the necessary nutritional profile for the species, and prioritize buying fresh, by mill date.
Apparently fish meal is difficult to get or include right now, and 'fish meal' can cover a lot of territory too. How about the farmed fish story, to throw another aside here? Forget that I brought it up!
Corn is yummy and works fine in many feeds, unless there's a specific problem for the animal owner or the critter being fed.

With layers the concern is getting enough protein and calcium. Corn is not known for having high values in either and is thought of as more of a treat than anything else. There's a false narrative that if your layers get too much of anything that's not packed full of protein and calcium you're not feeding them properly. I give my chickens all sorts of fun stuff to eat. Their eggs are beautiful and production never slows.

I bring in 2.5 tons of my poultry ration when I need it. I always have them load a compartment when bringing my livestock or hog feed in. With that said, my ration is heavy on rolled corn and rolled milo, with soybean meal, fish meal, yeast, calcium, salt w/trace, dical phosphate, vit A, D and E, with a light shot of either molasses or sunflower oil to help in binding. (Runs about 18% overall based on 12% protein corn)

So, I guess you can figure out where I stand with corn in a poultry diet. LOL
