I am just now finishing my chicken coop but now I need chickens! The problem is I can't decide where to get them from. I am thinking about ordering them from Meyer Hatchery. They seem to have a lot of variety in the breed selection. They are also located in Ohio which doesn't seem too cruel of a trip for the chicks considering I live in Virginia. Has anyone ordered any chicks from Meyer Hatchery and think it is a good idea if I do so as well? Or have any better options for me? Thanks! (:

Welcome to BYC!

I have never ordered from Meyers, so I can't say for sure. But you are best to order chicks as close to you as possible. There will be others stopping by here to welcome you to BYC that may have more info on this subject. Sorry I don't have much for you at this time.

But I do welcome you to this great community and we are so glad you could join!!

yes, I have ordered from Meyer Hatcheries, I ordered 4 barred rock from them and all of them came here (Michigan). They were in great health, and doing fine. except I lost one in the coop about 3 months later. couldn't find out why, I found it just lying there in the coop. That was 2 years ago. They will give them their shots before sending them if you ask them. (very cheap). That is where I'll go for my next batch of chicks. I'd highly recommend buying there. but you could lose baby chicks from any hatchery through shipping.
