We are in luck that the are in a building proces; so the whole yard is mud, and mud only. There is 1 bush; and they like to lay eggs under there too. And one dead christmas-tree from last winter. And I found some in the compost-heep, but since that is on the field now that stopped.. but they do not have many 'hiding' places anymore..
Before that it was easter everyday. But what helped was making small wooden low lay-sheds with straw in it close to the house, and some branches on top. They like the safety of feeling hidden when laying; so we recreated that in a way that we can easily find the eggs. And apparently they also feel more safe around us. Under the 1 bush and dead christmastree we also made a box with straw. If you can't get them to lay in the coop, but you would like to know where eggs are, and like mud-free eggs, there is little else to do then make the places they choose to lay more lay-friendly =/
We have 4 spots now; and no more days where eggs are outside those spots. They choose a different one every night though.
