threw out rotten egg nest -- what do you line your nests with?

I usually use hay, but tried a few nests with wood shavings which they didn't like at all. The hay works fine for the nest part, but I'll have to line the bottoms with something washable or tossable. Thanks for the suggestions. The learning curve here is realizing just how gunky the bottom of a nest can get. You just don't expect that at first.

I line the nest with newspaper, then add hay. Like chickenannie noted they shape the hay into a perfectly round bowl.
