Thrift Store Shopping for bargains

I love consignment stores for kid clothes!! I get a ton of stuff - all brand names - for cheap! All my son's clothes are going to my SIL for her son. She loves the hand-me-downs!! I may try to take my daughters clothes, that she has outgrown back and see if they will give me store credit. They are in great condition and I could use some store credit!

I also got most of my maternity clothes from a consignment shop! I find that the places with the best stuff are usually near a well-to-do neighborhood. I have found great clothes for pennies!!

OK, I went yesterday . . . got the cutest pair of summer slippers in yellow floral with a little bow for $3, two pair of slacks for $3 each (NAME BRAND TOO!), a wooden rolling pin like brand new for $2, sunglasses in pink, white, black with sparklies (faint, faint, faint!) for $1.93 each, and I KNOW the pink ones are on the filling station rack for $10~and a snow shovel for $3 for putting the Alpaca Poop on when I clean their pasture . . .spent a little over $30 and I know I walked out of there with well over $150 worth of stuff. I stopped at a yard sale today, and got a nice clean car seat for my little granddaughter for $5, a wonderful brown croc make up box/bag for $1 that is brand new and I might recycle for one of the granddaugters with goodies in it, and a potty chair for $2. Oh, and an art easle (didn't spell right!) for one of the granddaughters for $2. I was pleased. I have been a thrift store junkie for years, and my kids are too. Why in the world would I pay $20 for something new when I can get it gently used for a buck????? They had a crock type bowl for mixing, a big one for $6 that I am sorry I didn't get now . . .I love glass mixing bowls, and if its still there when I go back, then I know its meant for me to have it!

I raid the Goodwill for receiving blankets and fleece blankets which I then cut up to fit the bottoms of the Rubbermaid tubs that I house my rehab ducklings in.

I like to get the big bags of towels for Duck Hospital. I line the floor with towels and when theya re soiled I have a change of towels.
I toss the dirty ones int he washer and on and on.
They are usually about $3 a bag and the bag has 2 or 3 large bath towels, some hand towels and some wash cloths. Once I got a bag with a set of rubber ducky towels.

Twice I have found hand pieced, hand quilted bed quilts that need a little repair for under $40 each.

Amen to that! Browsing through all the stuff is half the fun. I bagged a $400 Ann Taylor suit last year for $7.50--looked like it had never been worn. I bet a good half of my clothes come from Goodwill and I get compliments all the time. Hmm.....it's Saturday morning.....maybe I'll go do a Goodwill run......

If you go thrifting a lot, you get good at browsing the stacks. I can skim a row of jeans, and every pair I pick to look at is designer! I'm not a lable queen, but the nicer stuff IS cut and constructed better. I got a Lavin dress for a dollar, and Seven for All Mankind jeans for two dollars? I passed up a Versace skirt for $7, it was ugly. My thrifting rules:
1. Try everything on! If there's no dressing room, go shopping in a loose skirt and a tight tank. Put the clothes on right there in the aisle.
2. Don't overlook colors or styles you wouldn't normally wear. You might find something really nice that goes with something you already have
3. Look closely for stains, holes, uneven stretching, and broken hardware. Hold it up in the light at different angles. Ties: all have stains
4. Shop on 1/2 off sale days
5. Nothing is a bargain if it doesn't fit, needs drycleaned or ironed, or you have nothing to wear with it.

I have a friend who volunteers at St. Vincent DePaul....they toss canning jars if they don't have enough room. Today he dropped off four laundry baskets full. It makes up for the people who never return them.
My son works there with him every other Saturday for the last year or so. I haven't had to buy that kid a pair of jeans since.

I shop at salvation army, and various other thrift shops. I'm always surprised at what I find.
I'm a very small person, and trying to find a pair of jeans that fit is a nightmare. I have found a few of my best fitting favorite designer label pairs at the salvation army store for 50 cents.
I've bought some really nice antique furniture from thrift shops too. I think the most expensive antique I bought was 40 dollars.

I love thrift shops
