https://www.backyardchickens.com/posts/23269481 This is the link to my original post. We've been treating Patrick the rooster with Acidified Copper Sulfate and Medistatin. We started with Medistatin, 1/2 teaspoon per day, for the first week. We were gone for four days during that period, and I wasn't sure his caregiver had been able to give him enough, so I extended out the Medistatin and also added Acidified Copper Sulfate to his water. He was still showing white in his mouth a week ago, but he was improving steadily, he went from not being able to crow at all, with significant respiratory symptoms, to a normal crow, no respiratory symptoms, his weight is excellent, he is bright eyed, eats everything in sight that he can. Sooo, yesterday he seemed to be in perfectly normal health. I let him out of his hospital pen, and he was not enthused about that, but he did eventually go out. However, he hid all day, then returned happily to roosting in our garage last night.
(That's what he was doing when he first got sick). There ARE other roosters in our flock, and Patrick is not on top of the pecking order, but he has always been somewhere in the lower mid range...not the lowest though. I have not observed any of the other roosters showing any interest in picking a fight with him lately. For some reason, our peafowl don't like him, and they occasionally will harass him, but that's all I've ever seen in the past few months.
The only slightly odd thing that I've noticed is that his droppings are a little small and dry. I just noticed that this morning, so maybe it's just because he's a little dehydrated, not sure. I have not had a fecal done on him.
I don't know if he is feeling crowded by the other roosters, and just afraid, or if there is something else wrong, which is what I suspect. Does anyone have any suggestions here? I want to give him a another day or two to see if he will adjust and return to the flock, but if not, I will probably return him to the hospital pen as he can't live in our garage.
I feel like i have maxed him out of the medications he was on at this point, and although I did not examine him as closely as I probably should have, last time I looked I didn't see white in his mouth.
I would like to re-home him if he continues to show no symptoms of anything over the next few weeks, to somewhere he can have his own flock but I'm just slightly afraid to, I'm not sure how long to wait, and I don't want him to become someone else's problem if he has some underlying problem I can't see or deal with. He is a lovely, sweet natured, spoiled Dominique baby. He dislikes being handled but once he knows his handler, he's fine. He would never dream of attacking a person. He's only three years old.
Suggestions, anybody?
