Tidbits in the news

Saddam wanted everyone to think he was getting nuclear weapons and he was very convincing.

If that's the best that MI6/the CIA could do for intelligence, governments need only watch the TV news and save all those millions spent on spooks.

'Mr. President/Mr, Prime Minister', we heard Saddam Hussein say he had Weapons of Mass Destruction'.

'Oh, they are long words to remember.'

'Call them WMD's when you talk to the proles.'

'OK! We'd better invade in the name of Christianity (yes, those two fools said that in public), democracy, human kindness and oil rights. No, let's not mention oil rights.'

Which thing? Cause I think if we are all honest here, we ALL post our opinions laced here and there with facts or we-wish-they-were-facts.

Nothing wrong with that, I think you will agree. It's healthy to be able to exchange views based on our own knowledge. I've learned a lot from threads like this one.

Gotta love this..

In the U.S. we have human rights that require the burden of proof to be on the accusers. When law enforcement has proof they will indeed arrest you. We would not allow a kangaroo court to try our former president... or any American, anywhere, that is a privelage we have as Americans and one that many soldiers have died for.

We do not operate our country like the rest of the world and we value our human rights and this is a prime example of how those rights get applied.

If GW was guilty of war crimes I assure you we have enough Bush haters here in our own borders to go after him... if it were so.

Because the United States does not permit any foreign entity or government from treading on our Presidents, past or present, unless you have more weapons and are not afraid to use them. Within the United States unless you are part of our own Justice Department you do not get to make right or wrong decisions regarding our government. As hatefull as some may find Bush, the county that attempts to detain him for any purpose would have basically comitted their last act.
So... we can stomp on every one elses presidents or rulers..
Case in Point- Manuel Noriega
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_Noriega
Manuel Antonio Noriega Moreno[2] (Spanish pronunciation: [maˈnwel noˈɾjeɣa]; born February 11, 1934) is a former Panamanian politician and soldier. He was military governor of Panama from 1983 to 1989.[3]
In the 1989 invasion of Panama by the United States he was removed from power, captured, detained as a prisoner of war, and flown to the United States.

WE the US of A, invaded Panama, and removed him and detained as a prisoner of war... yet we did not declare war on Panama...
then he was put on trial for drug trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering....
Geee couldn't we have done that to Saddam????
We stomp all over the world, bombing in countries we are NOT at war with, we cause deaths and casualties to innocent civilians, and say...'ooops'... so sorry...
I think that something needs to be done, but going into countries and either creating reasons (lying), or just not caring seems to be the norm for the US now..
And before you start flapping gums..
I was in Desert Shield/Storm, my squadron was over there flying sorties out of Saudi Arabia.
We need to do things differently, and if you all REALLY look online, and request copies of actual documents via the Freedom of Information Act, you will see that alot of the information Dubya was either fed OR he asked to have created.. was fabrications.
It took grainy pics and people "analyzed" them to say what ever the Powers that Be wanted them to say.
General Colin Powell even said so much.
Now lets find better Tidbits shall we!!

And a very refreshing one.

I admire the individual acts of bravery of military individuals such as yourself but am sickened by the waste of their lives and the lives of innocent people. I accept that US governments aren't the only ones to blame and British governments over the decades are another prime example. I guess that you are brave to write what you just did.

My understanding of the Noriega affair was that he was working on illegal activities with a certain agency but later became, with the knowledge he possessed, a liability. The same might apply to Saddam and bin Laden for all we know.

Governments are responsible for the welfare of their own citizens but, when they invade other countries, they take on responsibilities for those actions too. There are international laws, agreed by even aggressive Western powers, to which even they must adhere. It's not acceptable to invade a country for spurious or economic reasons, wreck it and walk away without even an apology.

One problem with freedom of information legislation around the world is that the delay in publication of files gives those who want to ample opportunity to edit them.

What can be done about it? How about voters demanding that their governments use taxes to benefit their own country instead of using a sizable proportion them to create, through military expeditions, opportunities for commercial interests such as weapons and material suppliers, construction companies and the oil business?
