time to cull, but I need some support.

So sorry she is not improving. If the two able people who are willing to help have experience culling a chicken in a quick manner then I would let them choose the method. If you are not tired of reading threads on the subject, here is another on that discussed options: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=593607&p=1

I just noticed that Kari_Dawn put the same link here right while I was posting.

That sounds like muscle spasms... and not a very scientific way of gaining knowledge. I would question that article.

I'm just repeating what it said, I'm not saying yea or nay either way lol

HAY - I do Irish praying too!! - Northern kind thou I take it you are too with your UK in your location!

Re: Chicken - you know what is best, you have her there we don't see the things you see. I had to have one girl put down who had a prolapse. It was very sad and hard but the Vet did it for me. It was for the best. Now I would do another if I had to myself. The hardest thing is making the choice and knowing IT'S TIME! Sometimes I am convinced we can "prevent death" rather than "preserve life." - We had one chick hatch with the guts on the outside and leg deformaty - DH did the job. I really think a killing cone and a swift axe is probably the quicket and cleanest job.. DO NOT EAT THIS BIRD!!!!!

Just read that - it is a bit sick - humans are not chickens and chickens do do mad things like run about the farm yard without a head - THAT IS THE NERVES IT IS NOT LIFE!!!!!!!!! - That is why I suggest a killing cone as it contains flapping and all of that that comes with a quick death of the bird.
- ok I also read that Mary Queen of Scots was still praying - I still believe this to be nerves twitching as this was the last thing that the brain sent a message to do it just got stuck because there was no further message fromt he brain to stop - thus proving the brain is dead and no feeling after that will occure.

Why are you screaming?
Did you see my comment that I was just repeating the story? Not that I believed or dis-believed?

Sorry to hear about that, it is even harder when you put so much work into trying to save her. If you are not good with an axe or hatchet (I'm not) I'd suggest holding her firm between your legs while kneeling or in a chair and then slitting her throat. That way you can hold onto her, talk to her or sing and she will bleed out quickly. Just keep her head held down and out (hold your other hand around her head and keep her mouth closed) while you do it.

thanks so much to everyone who offered help. It's such a hard thing to explain to non chicken people.

I tried to make it clear that I understand forums and how to search, DAFS right? Yeah, always rude.

Love peace and bicycle grease!

This your pet no matter what it is going to be difficult to put down. I had never processed a chicken til this year not one of the easiest chores by any stretch of the imagination. Fast & quick is best for your pet ridgerunner has a good suggestion. Cones contain the bird. My biggest suggestion is have someone else do the deed for you simply because of the emotions involved for you. It is really hard to do the deed thru tears. You have made a heavy emotional commitment trying to get her better & it hasn't worked for her. Just a thought trying not to be rude.
