Timing on moving chicks to the coop

I have 3 chicks that will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. We are still building our coop, but hope to move them in next weekend. Is there a certain way you begin to introduce them to the coop? Or just put them in and be done?

You can do either. I like to get them out for field trips to the coop before the final "In the coop you go". But you don't have to. But it helps to lock them in the coop on the day you take them out for good, for a couple days and not let them out. This helps to get them comfortable and feel safe inside the coop. It also teaches them where home is and will always return to the coop at night instead of you having to run them in. If you don't lock them in, they will not naturally know to go into the coop and you will be chasing chickens til midnight! Ha!

Just put them in!

Do make sure they are protected from hawks when going outside. If you are going to free range them I'd start with a very small fenced in area, covered with netting to protect from hawks. Additionally, cats can attack them at that age I have found.

They will probably not want to roost for awhile...sometimes several months and are very timid.
