I'm currently using timothy hay in the nesting boxes and after a bit of tentative nibbling and rearranging it to suit themselves, the hens all seem to leave it alone. I use pine shavings on the floor and under the roost.
I am using it in the nest box. I have a pair of cheap scissors in the bag and chop off some short lengths when I add to the nest box. Some of the chickens have taken a liking to it and this way they won't get crop bound (I hope)
i had been giving my chickens some timothy i have for my rabbits as theres really nothing for them to eat while their out wandering the yard but just a week ago i went and bout 6 bales of third cut(third is softer then 2nd or 1st cuttings) alfalfa and they think they've died and gone to heaven they love it...even my quail who are super picky love it.
if you can find some nice tender green alfalfa around where you live get some your chickens will surely love it.
i wanted a way for my flock of 75 to get the best greens so i got the timothy/alfalfa pellets & soak them in warm water till they become a mash then i add a 1/2 cup or so of that to the bucket of wet mash feed i make for my flock every night for their evening meal, i always have a lot left over and put that out in the mornings for their breakfast ,so to make this mash i add 6 to 12 hard boiled eggs, into my blender shells & all & i blend that with water then add in ACV & liquid multy vits and once in a wile i may add in a can of tuna, ( if i didn't have enough eggs ) then this all goes into a bucket 2/3 full with egg maker layer feed & more water to make a mash & add in any left over food from my kitchen , toss that all together well adding in more water if needed it should be like cooked oatmeal & feed, they go crazy for it and my flock stays healthy, and i feel this wet mash food helps them deal better with hot weather here in AZ & keeps them better hydrated & may also help prevent egg binding that could all start with dehydration. but in the colder weather i usually feed sprouted barley & wheat grass 1 1/2 buckets of that every day along with free choice dry layer feed , but in the hot weather the barley & wheat seems to mold over night, so i switched to this mash feed above, and its working well. im calling it my rotation diet green sprouts all winter long when there is no green & this wet mash feed above that's best for the hot weather.
