A magical land in Northern IL
Woke up this morning. Did my usual routine. Come to sit at my desk in my room and notice this dust stuff everywhere. Okay here I conclude it’s just because the chicken feed bag is on top of the desk and maybe the dust got everywhere.

I’m sitting here looking at my black phone screen and notice these dust spots are freaking moving!!!!!!

I’m so scared. What the heck. Please help. Are we under attack from mites?!? Weather has been warm and humid. Help!!!!! I’m so itchy

Open up the feed bag a look inside. They sound like grain mites. They won't bite you but they will ruin the feed.
They, like most insects, can be killed with permethrin spray. I would get a bottle of RTU permethrin and spray down your room then go back and dust/clean all surfaces and vacuum thoroughly. Obviously, get the feed bag out of there.
Get the date code/lot number off the bag before disposing of it. After spraying down the feed and exterior of the bag with permethrin, I would bag it up in a plastic garbage bag and tape it shut to seal it and put it out in your large trash can for collection.
If you have any other feed purchased from the same store, go examine it. Even if it doesn't have the same lot code, it might be contaminated from poor storage practices at the retailer.
Actually, before you bag up the feed, pull a sample of it, bugs and all, into a container to take to the store with you so you can share your experience with the manger there. And get your money back...

Dobie lover you are a life saver. I honestly am crapping bricks here. It’s everywhere. My laptops printer everything !! 😭

I am using hot water and dish soap and bagging everything like you said. I can’t believe this. Is it because I left the bag opened? The windows have been open it reached 76° in the house yesterday. I wonder if that was perfect breeding conditions for these bugs

Is it because I left the bag opened?
No. They would have chewed their way out or found tiny holes to get out of the bag. Leaving the bag open just made it easier to get out.

Perfect hatching conditions for eggs that were in the feed.
Will these hurt the chickens?
No. The chickens can eat them if they care to.
After I clean here I’m going to clean their entire brooder / room
How old are your birds? Where are they? I would move them out to the coop if you can. Your weather sounds perfect. Chicks can be reared outdoors in freezing weather as long as they have a good heat source and are blocked from direct breezes. They do much better out there too.

Birds will be 2 weeks on friday

I keep them in our second closet it’s decent sized. I have them in 3 connected boxes/ container.

The weather has been nice but I am afraid however I was wondering yesterday if they can be moved sooner. So possibly moving them out sooner is better ?

I am very afraid I just remembered I put a cup of feed into their brooder right before I noticed the bugs. I am so so scared. I am really worried I hope they will be okay. First time here and I’m already making big mistakes lol

They can go out now with their heat source. I prefer to use a brooder plate if a hen isn't taking care of things for me.

Grain mites eat grain, not blood. They shouldn't bother the chicks. But if you are worried just keep an eye on them.

I remember a couple posts back you showed me and I truly admired everything you had showed. I am going to get things ready to transfer them. Thank you a million times. Can I keep you updated ? 😁
