tips and secrets of the GQF 1502 sportsman...

Pics
Anybody have pics of the inside and out of the new Digital Sportsman 1502? Our older one came with a hatching tray cover and I have read that the newer models do not come with one. We had ours sectioned off so we could identify different breeds at hatch when they looked similar.
I've got two 1502s, one older and one of the newer styles, i don't hatch in mine so the hatching tray isn't an issue, but yes the newer hatching tray is corrugated plastic stapled together, it is much deeper so if you did hatch in it then anything bigger then quail don't have to belly crawl like in the older ones.

Do all of you use pads in the sportsmans (for humidity) or just a pan of water?
only as needed depending on the time of year, during the winter things tend to be drier around here and a single pad is often needed to keep humidity in the 30s, in late summer it runs in the upper 40s lower 50s even with no water in the tray. i use two of the wicks in my hatcher, they give about a 12% boost per wick.

I live in Eastern,Ky and its so humid that we have to cover our tray completely with foil just to keep the humidity from getting above 50%..if I use just the tray it will shoot up to 75%+...That's with a good calibrated hygrometer..So to keep the humidity around 40% I cover the whole water tray with foil air tight and just poke a couple holes in it..

your picture is of a Dickie's incubator, i haven't owned one of those in about 30 yrs so i don't recall, how much ventilation does yours have and how much of that is open? that can make a huge difference in the internal humidity levels.

TI think we find ways that work for us. When I open the incubator and because it does spill out the humidity as well as temperature, but a broody will get off her nest for a few minutes to eat, drink and poop. When I open the incubator I do mist the eggs with warm water before I close the lid and the humidity seems to raise more quickly and stable off.

I just started using a 2nd new Genesis. The water tray had changed from the previous version so I set it up to run and filled one water channel at a time to make a record of what the humidity was in that channel. Then I started combining channels. 1 & 2, then 3 & 4, 1 & 3, 2 & 4, 1,2, & 3. etc. This gave me a good idea of which ones I needed to fill to get the right humidity.

I have all of the vents open and the water shut off and because we have been having on and off rain the past few days the outside humidity is around 100%. I haven't been able to get my incubator below 45% and it's been around 50%. I have the water tray completely covered. Maybe I'll shut the vents and see if that will help now that no water is going into the incubator.
