Hens go broody when you don’t want them to… and won’t go broody when you do. 
I would think you might need 2 dogs, if you have a lot of coyotes. i would think 1 dog might have a harder time protecting everyone by itself. We have 3 GP's and one White Shepherd, they work great at guarding... have 5 emu also and they are good at chasing dogs and scaring people... hehe
