Tips for introducing a new coop!

When I moved the flock from their three separate coops into the one big one I organized a pet-carrier chain with my family members after dark, loading up the 2 carriers we had and hand-carrying the more docile ones the couple hundred feet to the new coop, where we unloaded them and set them on the perches.

They were locked in for a week before let out into the run because I didn't want them trying to make their way out of the uncovered pen back to their previous area.

If you have adequate coop space it's not really a hardship to shut them in for several days while they learn that the new coop is now home.

I used grub bugs and had to carry some (those who weren’t motivated by the treats to their new coop)…three evenings and on the fourth, they figured it out. Probably depends on the chicken, but mine are suckers for bugs!

To note, their original coop is still there and I use it as an extra place to lay eggs…it’s all connected to their chicken yard. Sometimes they go back to it to roost. Chickens are…chickens. 🤪
