Tips on getting ready for winter

Here's how I solved the drafty door problem:

vinyldoor.jpg

It's vinyl cut in strips and stapled to a board that gets screwed to the wall. For the first week or so I tucked the center flaps up so they learned how to push through. They learn quick, you just have to keep an eye on them to make sure so one gets stuck outside until they figure it out.

I can't help with tips for winter we rarely get two days in a row below freezing down here!!! I don't know how you northerners deal with all that cold!! BRRRRRRR!

Thanks for the info CUDA....I really worry about winter being it is our 1st having chikens.

I don't have the enclosed chicken house. I hope to make one next year for a different breed but for now what we have will have to do.

I have just a raised up off the ground wire coop with the wood frame. They will all be sharing run ins with the other animals. We can't do electric heat waterers cause of the other animals. So I guess I will be bringing water out twice a day.

I heard too that giving them cooked oatmeal (warm) during terrible cold weather is a nice treat for them. I know my chickens LOVE oatmeal!

Drafts are not a problem with adult chickens. It won't hurt them, trust me. I live in Michigan, and the only thing my fowl have for a coop are barrels to get into. You can see some of my pens HERE .

Cuda - great article! I'm looking forward to winter with my gals. They sure love being outside hunting in the tall grass and around all the trees. I don't have their run done yet but it is so apparent that they want the outdoors!

I'm still draft-proofing my new coop. Too many people have been for too long been warning against drafts in the coop for me to think it's a myth. That some have had good luck keeping their birds in windy conditions doesn't convince me.

I've had birds survive poor weather conditions. Surviving isn't the same as thriving.
