Tips on how to kill boredom and loneliness for a blind quail.

They carry millet sprays for parrots that my quail absolutely love! They’re cheaper ordered in bulk but you can get a couple to try. They are good enrichment because the quail has to harvest its own seeds off of the stalk. They make a nice rattling noise too, if he gets around mainly though hearing.
Ordered them just now off of Amazon...arriving tomorrow. I'll let u know how that goes. 🤞

Toby,

Don't have much in the way of advice but I really enjoyed reading your posts.

It sounds like he's a very lucky little quail to have you to take care of him!

It's amazing the bond you can develop with a special needs animal. I just lost my little Crissy (Easter Egger chicken with a crossed beak) a few months ago. She was about 18 months old. She got along pretty well with a few extra little modifications to the coop. (Deep water pan and wet mash mostly.) Her life was a bit of a struggle but she seemed happy out sun bathing, pecking around, etc. with the other "girls". Losing her was REALLY hard!

You might enjoy watching the following You Tube video even though this chick's situation is different than your quail's. I have seen it several times and get teary-eyed every time. Someone here at BYC posted a link to it years ago.

If the link doesn't work I think it's called "Don't kill that chick" (I think it used to be called "Saving Elvis"?

Treats?
A "chick stick" treat is similar to a flock block (mentioned above) only much smaller and it can be hung at the appropriate height so it doesn't get messed on.

A little bit of canned cat food might make a good treat? What do other people think?

My parents use to give their quails a little bit of salad greens and an occasional piece of strawberry.

Good luck with your little quail!

Oh wow! U're so sweet. Thank u for ur kind words and for the advice. 😗 I will be watching the movie and I will be trying the strawberries being that I already have those in the fridge. I'm a little hesitant to watch the clip to be honest😬. I hope it's not one of those sad-endings movies. I don't do well with those. Hehe. I'll let u know how that goes though. Last but not least, I'd like to offer my condolences on the death of little Crissy. 😥 I know how hard it could be losing a beloved pet...😔

Toby,

The video is not sad. Get teary-eyed in a good way over the relationship between the man and the little rooster. These days there's so much in the world that is ugly and mean. It's nice to see someone care about a little bird.

Thank You for your condolences. Yes-losing a beloved pet is always hard.

Let us know how it goes with the treats you ordered? The millet sprays sound like a good idea. I wonder how hard it would be to grow them?

Well, I'm relieved to hear the tears would be happy tears. Definitely watching it now. I had a very traumatizing experience with the rooster in this pic. His name was Al. My best friend/companion for 4 years. He would defend and protect me from harm. Very fearless. He loved eating ice cream, egg shells, butter and believe it or not chicken. Lol. He would sleep perched on my legs at night. He was like my child. One day, my mom got mad at me so she took him and gave him to a complete stranger in the street and told me nothing. I posted flyers, looked in basements and alleyways. I was in such bad shape that I had to seek therapy. Finally, my mom admitted to me how this woman she handled my Al to said that she was going to have him for dinner that night. 😟 The guilt of not having protected him, of having failed him was destroying me inside. So for 3 years I cried myself to sleep every single day until...

Al's spirit came to visit me I guess to let me know that he was fine and to stop crying. He came on 4 separate occasions. Always around 3 a.m. while I was in bed. And no, it wasn't a dream because I was awake. I even smelled him and he smelled the same. I petted him and he seemed solid. His comb had the same bumps and his waddle had the same folds as before. It was him!!! After the last visitation I stopped crying and he never returned. I guess my sad story had a happy ending at the end.😊 Well, my main reason for telling u this story is so that u could feel some solace in knowing that Crissy is ok and happy somewhere just waiting to some day reunite with u.

So yeah, I'm excited to try out these millet sprays. It arrives tomorrow. I don't know how difficult it would be to grow but I assume that with the correct environment and some dedication u could probably grow anything.

Guess what?! I just finished watching the movie and...
I absolutely loved it.❤ Thank u for sharing. God bless Elvis for being such a good and loving chicken, and God bless his father for coming to the rescue and using his ingenuity to find a way to make Elvis' life a better one. Awesome story!

@slifeh I'm still in awe & so grateful for the beautiful gift my Al gave to me. Not just did it solidify my belief of the afterlife but it also made it evident that even if they're no longer with us they can still see us and do come around to check up on us. I hope people realize that even though they're animals they still have feelings and have the ability to bond with us on an eternal level. With this said, I really do hope that everyone appreciates their pets and treats them right because their love is pure, true and because they deserve the same in return.

What can I offer my quail who's blind to bring back some happiness and joy to his life? I've already tried the following: music/ambience sounds, I let him out to walk around the room 2x a day, let him play in his soft paper bedding as well as in his sand cubical 2x a day. It's winter time here now so no sun available. I place silk blankets on my bed and let him do his thang where he stretches out and fluffs up his feathers. Last but not least, he gets about 20 kisses a day and a whole lotta sweet talkin' from his mama (me) ❤ Ok, so my question is what could I do besides what I'm already doing that'll make him a happier quail?
Btw guys, I was wondering why u guys were saying that his beak needed trimming. I didn't even realize that this pic was taken before I filed it down. So to put ur concerns at ease, I thought I'd let u know that his little beak is now the appropriate length and can eat his food much easier than before. Thank u all for caring. I truly appreciate it.😊

Sorry to hear about Al! It sounds like you shared a really strong bond with him. Thanks for sharing!

Totally agree! These animals have such tender little hearts!

Supposedly Abraham Lincoln said the following:

“I care not for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.”

So today we just received our package of spray millet and this is how it went...(btw, I tried to upload a short clip but wasn't able to so I've added a pic). Mr. Toby pecked at it a couple of times and probably decided it wasn't for him so he went to eat his rice instead. Ms. Shy Chia on the other hand, went for it immediately like the curious little bird that she is and actually loved it. This is her in the pic eating her millet. With that said, thanks for the recommendation. I would give it 👍🏻👍🏻
