Tips on introducing a new horse to my other 2 boys!!

Yeah, my vet says to keep new horses isolated far enough away that if they snort or sneeze, the wind won't carry it from one horse to another.

It's actually better to quarantine them away from the barn and main turnouts incase they are carrying something like strangles, which can live for a long time in the dirt in your barn...

So if I were going to quarantine her, I'd quarantine her out front. If she's already really well trained for electric or you have panels that you can setup, I'd keep her well away from the shared fence for a couple of weeks.

Oh and no worries...pics will be on tomorrow night ..Yay!!!!

Oh, Oh pictures!!

Well, at the beginning of summer we ended up getting a new dun quarterhorse mare.

She was never raised on grass, so we have her in a different pen at the moment and have been slowly introducing her to grass.
What we've done about introducing her with other horses is we take her out to the riding ring on nice evenings and make 2 seperate spots of hay, then we bring another one of our horses out and let them in there for the whole night.
Of course we monitor them to make sure that they'll get along fine.

She does a lot better with mares than with our geldings.
Hope she gets better, we are hoping to breed her next year to a buckskin quarterhorse in hopes of her having a buckskin colt.

I don't know if you have a riding ring, but even a seperate pasture will work suffiently!

Good luck!

What I like to do when introducing a new horse to a herd is to pair the new horse with each old member individually before turning them all out together.

After she's been there a few days and everybody is used to the fact that she exists, put her and the more mellow of your two geldings together and see how they do. Once all is well, put her in with the other gelding for a few days. Once they get to know each other, throw the three of them out together.

Because your herd is small, the pally can meet each of the boys individually. In a larger herd, I usually introduce the newcomer to the middle-to-lower ranking herd members first and then out with the whole herd.

Can't wait for the pics!
