Tips on Scaring Away a Racoon

My great dane came face to face with a coon a while back (like four months ago) while four of them were snooping around my yard. He wouldn't do anything to the coon but it startled him and it was something new so he gave out an aggressive "woof!!" The raccoon ran backwards so fast up the fence, it was almost unbelievable. I haven't seen them back in the yard since

Best raccoon deterrent that I've ever had!!!

We have a live trap and the only thing we've caught in it so far is our cats a couple times and two skunks. Still hoping to get that racoon! My tip is thus: whatever bait you put in, make sure they REALLY have to get in there to get it. So, don't just throw a few marshmallows in and call it good. I never caught anything until I put an almost-empty peanut butter jar in the trap.. that way whatever gets in there has to really get in to see what goodies are awaiting. I had a basic bowl that we would put various treats in (tuna! sardines! marshmallows!) but the trap was never triggered and the food was gone in the morning. I think it was just reaching over and grabbing it.

I had an empty jar of peanut butter disappear from my trap.Critter took it over the fence into the neighbors woods, lol. Don't know how they miss that step plate and get the goodies!

Stake the trap down. They will roll it. Use a can of sardines, just pop the seal so the smell gets out but they can't get the sardines. Put it way back in the trap.

Good luck!

Sorry for your troubles! Locking them in a secure place is a great security blanket. Raccoons are smart and nasty. We lock the chickens in a converted shed at night. Hardware cloth is stapled around the window. If we need to leave the house during the day, they get padlocked into a 7x13 chain link kennel that has chicken wire lashed to the top and bottom.

It was kind of a pain to go the extra mile, but you only need to do it once and it will be invaluable.

I'm not sure you can use anything other than a dog to scare away coons. They seem to get used to just about anything. Best thing would be to have someone trap it and relocate it. If you attempt this be careful this suckers are real mean. You might also want to keep a check on your dog, coons have been know to kill dogs, especially if a coon gets a dog in water it will drown it every time.
