Tips, Tricks or Other Ideas for Convincing Parents to Let Me Get Fish?

Btw, Don't put a pleco in a 4 gallon tank unless it is a baby and you will be ready to move it to a bigger tank as in grows. A pleco sold as the common pleco at the pet store will ultimately need a 100 gallon tank and can grow 2 feet long. Bristlenose plecos only grow about 6 inches long, but still need a 20+ gallon tank. Also, they don't clean like people think...only get pleco's of you love the fish, not because you need a cleaner...i still have to feed mine veggies and algae wafers.

I agree with yellowchicks that a lot of betta's in the pet stores are not that healthy, but i have only lost 1 female a few days after i got here (I have bought around 20 betta's from pet stores. I've had some live with me for 5 years. with good care, they do amazingly well. I tend to get the sick looking ones to see if i can save them, and the practically come back to life...its really cool.

Oh, and mystery snails are another snail that don't reproduce like crazy, and they are easy to find at the pet store. I used to breed them, and if you don't want babies, the egg sacs are laid above water and are easy to scrape off. Nirite snails are also really cool and fun, but i am not sure about thier reproduction.

Good Luck!

Yes, I am shopping at petsmart....believe me, I looked long and hard for aquarium/fish stores, but no luck. Hmm, I wonder how I can convince my parents to let me mail fish...
The typewriter does still work (!!!!) but the ribbon is a bit faint. A new one is on the way. I am so happy with it right now though!!!
I think I'll try ghost shrimp--they don't get very big. If they get eaten...I'll know for next time....And thanks to all for the well wishes and advice!!

On a more poultry-oriented note, yesterday we ordered the new chickies!!! They're due Feb. 13th. Which is actually Friday The 13th....*Slams head on wall*
But I'm still a bit sad that breeders only sell straight run. We'll be doing hatchery quality for another year I guess. But who knows, maybe it'll work out! Just an excuse to order more next year

(My mom thinks fertile eggs are absolutely disgusting and doesn't want to find a chick inside. I explained the incubation process to her, and she isn't buying it. So no roosters for me. Well actually, she did say we could get straight run if we gave away the roosters before they started breeding. But she said 12 max, and I need at least 6 females for show. She thought it would work perfectly and I was like, "They could be all roosters..." And she's like, "No, only half will be."

So there you have it.)

We ordered from Estes, btw. What are you all doing this year? Setting eggs? Nothing?
I'm still hoping that at some point this year I can convince my parents to let me hatch Trader Joe's (or Whole Foods, etc) fertile eggs....We could give away the roosters...
Well anyways, we're getting 3 assorted polish, 3 Easter Eggers, 3 Red sex-links, and 3 Danish brown leghorns. What are you guys getting? Anything?
I've heard that Estes can send extra....

Im pushing for my mom to let me get a couple new chicks from this small poultry farm in NJ. They have great looking heritage RIR but they don't ship, and the prices can be expensive. Also(Its a long shot) but Im also hoping to raise a couple turkeys for the fair this coming spring.

thats so cool that the type writer works! Ghost shrimp are really fun! I've raised them and bred them...mixed success in breeding :) I had one female betta once that would kill the smallest snail i would try to put in her tank...she was worst than any boy i've ever owned. She killed a few ghost shrimp and snails before i gave up :)

Haha, yeah, with 12 you could end up with all boys...it's happened to me before, very annoying :) half grown fetile eggs are a delicacy in some countries!
I ordered new chicks today too!! I got mine from Mcmurray hatchery. Never used them, so we'll see how it goes. I got a couple dark cornish roosters and a brown leghorn rooster for a breeding project, along with more than 12 other breeds of mostly hens. I got more cochins (my favorite breed ever!) and crevecoeurs in the mix...i can't wait for those :)
I also ordered 10 more ducklings from metzer farms. I'm even more excited about these than the chickens...i love ducks and dogs more than anything!

Hehe, my parents are super cool with animals as long as they are outside...they get annoyed with my inside animals (fish, dogs, reptiles, bugs, and amphibians).

This year i also plan to start incubating and hatching my own quail eggs...it's annoying having to buy them all the time :)

Man, i can't wait until we finish putting in the perimeter fence...i also really want to raise a few heritage turkeys :)

You and me both lol, they have some awesome narragansetts and bourbon reds I have my eye on. Great thing about heritage is they don't get so fat like modern commercial breeds like broad breasted bronze turkeys. You can actually keep them past slaughter date as a pet or show piece. That's what I plan on doing, raising them as show pieces with my chickens instead of slaughtering them. Plus I can raise them in 4h too.

lol. yeah, i plan on doing that...i also plan on breeding them and hatching my own babies to eat :)

That sounds like a fun plan. I would love to do that but I don't have enough space to have adults AND raise some babies. Maybe when I get out of college(I'm a sophomore in high school). Definetly someday for sure.

I want to have a big farm when i grow up. My favorite horses are clydesdales, so I definitely want some of those. Maybe cattle, they seem fun and hardy. Not sure If I want to maintain both horses and cattle by myself. Oh, and I would want a big pond at my farm to fish in!
